We're moving to our new house soon and I'm seriously considering DirecTV. Looking at getting the Genie DVR w/ a couple mini Genies.
Any opinions? 10/17/2013 12:58:38 PM |

they are running some decent promos right now. i got them when i moved into my new house and have been pretty happy with them. i've only had the service go out a few times in really nasty storms. the Genie DVR is pretty sweet too.
try to find someone you know with a referral number cause then both you and him get a $100 discount on your contract: it's $10 credit per month off your total monthly bill until the $100 is exhausted. 10/17/2013 1:19:47 PM |

You should never get Directv for the first time unless it's right before football season starts and they give you the NFL package for free. If not...then what a waste of a first time sign up. 10/17/2013 1:40:22 PM |

Don't they lock you into a 2 years contract?
Also don't you have to pay for equipment sometimes...like especially if you want new DVR or something (As opposed to renting it for $7 or something) 10/17/2013 1:59:15 PM |

You pretty much never have to pay for equipment for your first sign up. They also usually give you free NFL package for 3 or 4 months (which is the whole season depending on when you sign up), and all of the premium channels for a good amount of time as well (I want to say I had them all for a year for free...but it was a long time ago and I don't remember). And yes...it's a 2 year contract.
The initial sign up, IMO, is worth it to sacrifice for two years of directv. After that...its up to you. I loved Directv for a long time...but once streaming got huge, I couldn't justify $100 a month for no premium channels and limited sports. 10/17/2013 2:09:37 PM |

If any of you ballers have multiple homes, the price of DirecTV keeps getting better...you only get charged for the receivers in each new location...so if you owned like 20 houses you could get DirecTV at all of them for like $400 a month 10/17/2013 2:20:59 PM |

I pay $8/mo for the privilege of just having a DVR. Another $10/mo for HD service.10/17/2013 2:27:49 PM |

^ I'm pretty sure he meant the actual equipment. They throw that in "for free." Although you do have to turn it in if you cancel. 10/17/2013 2:33:18 PM |

Through Direct? I was thinking they charged you like $200/$300 or something up-front for the device?

i pay $25/month for the Genie then $6/month for each additional mini-Genie. and yeah, it's a 2 year contract upon signing up. i owed nothing at signup either; i wasn't billed until my first month was up. 10/17/2013 3:13:43 PM |

I second jbrick83. when i first signed up it was free sunday ticket for a year then half off the second year, free hbo, showtime, cinemax, etc. for six months, and $50 off per month for the first year. You can also do automatic billpay and paperless billing to get free HD and a free DVR. after the first year it starts to get pricy, but the money you save from the first year vs. twc makes it worth it. 10/17/2013 3:25:00 PM |

DirectTV so far for me is great! I've only had it since August but so far I'm really liking it. The Genie is really useful because it can record up to 5 shows at once, 4 if you're watching something. That comes in handy on Sunday nights for me because there's a lot of good stuff on (football, Walking Dead, Homeland, etc.)
The free Sunday Ticket is what really attracted me though. I love being able to switch to any game I want. The free premium channels are nice too, they came free for 3 months. Installation was free and there were no fees for equipment.
The two year contract was the only minus, as I've never had a dish service before but I've never had a problem with it going out. It's a hell of a lot better than TWC imo and you can bundle internet through AT&T and knock $5 off your bill each month. It's not quite as fast as road runner but I don't have an issue streaming Netflix so it works fine for my needs. 10/17/2013 3:26:16 PM |

Good to read the positive reviews.
But I'm not gonna fuck around w/ my TWC internet. I work from home and $60-70/mo is well worth the quality and piece of mind for good internet.
I'm concerned about the install. My AV guy prewired the house so that we could put the satellite on the roof. I hope the installer doesn't try to cut corners. If he's a bum, I'll send him packing. 10/17/2013 10:12:34 PM |

This is a timely thread.
I am trying to decide between Dish or DirecTV. The price difference is pretty negligible. I am looking at the Choice package on direct, vs the lowest entry package on Dish. Channels are roughly the same but I think the sports package is slightly better with DirecTV (especially if you count half a season of sunday ticket).
I think the Hopper seems like a better DVR than Genie. As near as I can tell, Dish doesn't charge you for their Sling, which is their DVR on the go unit. DirecTV has a one time $99 charge for Genie Go.
Anyone have Dish now and like it? 10/18/2013 12:11:49 AM |

just don't do bundles through them. The dickhead that I did my signup through told me that my entire bundle bill would be $75 bucks. I made sure I asked him that it was for the ENTIRE package, TV, internet, phone...and he said yes every time. My first month I notice that I'm getting billed $50 for D-TV and $75 from Windstream for Internet/Phone. I think, "ok, what the f?" So I call Windstream and they tell me this exactly:
"Yeah, we bill separately. Directv can't do a bundle with us, so all they do is sell our services with their packages. You are not the first that has called us and told us that they are telling you the wrong prices. Can we take down your information because we are trying to compile a list of who all is having this issue?"
I don't expect to hear anything about it, but damn it pissed me off that he lied to me just to lock my ass in to that contract. 10/18/2013 2:05:21 AM |

I have Dish and my parents have Direct TV and I absolutely prefer Dish over Direct. There isn't much that separates them, so it comes down to the intangibles. The interface for Dish is just easier for me to navigate and it looks cleaner. I'm happy with my service. 10/19/2013 9:40:55 PM |

please help me settle a debate
weren't all of the FSN regional channels, NESN, MSG, ROOT, Altitude, etc channels previously available on one big Sports Package? I definitely recall living in NC and being able to watch FSN-Arizona or FSN-Ohio. I called DTV today and they said it's strictly based on zip code as far as which channels you get 11/20/2014 4:34:47 PM |

so either they've changed things within the past 3 years since I last had DTV or the customer agent was confused 11/20/2014 4:48:21 PM |

Agent was confused. You get your regional RSN(s) based on zip code, but you can get the rest as part of the sports pack for I think $16/month...which is a little pricey considering all of the out of market pro sports are blacked out. 11/20/2014 5:17:32 PM |
