An 11-Year-Old Girl's Brother, Mom, And Dad Were Arrested After She Was Raped And Gave Birth In A Bathtub

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/otilliasteadman/11-year-old-girl-birth-bathrub-mom-dad-brother-arrested-rape

That's unspeakably atrocious. How did the parents not know their daughter was pregnant??? Are they fucking blind? They all should be locked up for a very long time, and never allowed to see their daughter/sister ever again.

I think we've seen a fairly large shift in public opinion of the police as a whole over the last week or so. And in some respects, choking someone to death and watching your co-worker choke someone to death without intervening isn't that big of a moral difference.

I totally agree with both sentences. Does that mean we can’t respect the other 99%+ of police? Or guilt by association?

from what I can tell there are about 700,000 police in the US. 1% of that is 7,000 cops. Do you think 693,000+ of them would try to stop their fellow officer from choking someone out? seems a bit naive imo.

Do you think 99% of priests are super moral? How about insurance salesmen? Auto mechanics? But I guess cops are just really, REALLY great people overall. Just a few bad apples.

Fair enough. I guess the idea of respecting an overwhelming but slightly less than 99% of law enforcement is wrong.

Do I think things need to change, yes

Do I think what happened to george floyd and others is wrong, yes

Am I going to vilify several hundred thousands of law enforcement officers that are good, no. I certainly don’t think it is out of line to respect the job the good police do.

I'm not saying they're all literal murderers. But their "don't snitch on other cops" code is just as harmful as anyone else's. There is a good reason that 4 Minneapolis officers were arrested and not just the one who did it. Way, way more than 1% of cops are complicit with the stuff their bad co-workers do.

Not really.

Sure in the nearly 7 years since I made that comment that you feel the need to ask me about every couple years I have further learned how fucked the institution is and the depth of reform that is needed, but I still feel most cops get into it for altruistic reasons, and I'm happy they're there, and feel it would be ignorant to judge every single officer through the lens of the fucked up videos we post here.

But yet

I don't know what the number is but it ain't no fucking 1%, which TT's latter point below addresses.

Agreed on both points. Not sure why it took this extent to cause the former, but we'll take what we can get at this point. Maybe this is the result of people being locked up bc of Rona + lack of reasoning for the gross victim blaming that typically takes place cheat code. Or maybe the shift is because this one is just so excruciatingly heartbreaking, and so fucking long. But the Eric Garner murder was too in both respects. Where were all of these people then? Guess it's really pointless and counterproductive to drag people that are at the table now for not being at the table in the past. Ultimately I think this shift is the culmination of decades of outrage, and I'm here for it.

Imo - yes it’s guilty by association. If you aren’t calling out your coworkers for shitty behavior then you’re 100% guilty by association. In a lotta these videos there aren’t cops saying “hey woah, we’ve got him down that’s enough” or anything close to defusing the situation. That’s guilt by association. The entire system of protecting your “brothers” from legal trouble is guilt by association.

Furthermore, I’m not all in on respecting and honoring people for doing a job they signed up for. Let’s not get carried away sucking off our “heroes in blue”. Hell, if anything that builds their egos to the point where they may feel beyond reproach or above the law. Maybe it’s a bit overboard to honor cops before football games and trip over ourselves to be the first to thank them for their service. It also creates a belief among the public (mostly among upper middle class whites that have limited interaction with cops) that cops are always good and always right and above reproach. They have a hard job. A job I wouldn’t want. And I can fully acknowledge that while also believing they should be held accountable for their actions. Blanket statements like “respect the boys in blue” make people blind to the issues with the system imo.

Ok yeah he definitely shouldn't have been pulled over for going 65 in a 70. If he's going 40? Yeah, definitely. A lot of interstates/highways have minimum speeds because travelling significantly slower than surrounding traffic is dangerous. It's why farm machinery/slow moving vehicles aren't allowed on many major highways.

Also disturbing that we may not even have the full video. I REALLY want to know what that sergeant said to the cop that filed the warrant when they both step outside the apartment and the video cuts out. This could get even worse than it already is.

"Despite no evidence in the complaint that police made efforts to independently verify the informant’s tip, such as conducting any surveillance or additional checks as required by policy, the search warrant was approved by an assistant state’s attorney and a judge.

But CBS 2 quickly found, through police and court records, the informant gave police the wrong address. The 23-year-old suspect police were looking for actually lived in the unit next door to Young at the time of the raid and had no connection to her.

CBS 2 also found police could have easily tracked the suspect’s location and where he really lived because at the time of the raid, he was wearing an electronic monitoring device."

Quote :
"“OK, OK, you don’t have to shout,” the sergeant said.

“I don’t have to shout?” Young yelled. “This is f****** ridiculous. You’ve got me in handcuffs. I’m naked, and you kicked my house in. I keep telling you, you’ve got the wrong place.”"

Quote :
"In response to the city’s emergency motion and efforts to stop CBS 2 from airing the body camera video, CBS 2’s attorneys filed a response in federal court Monday night. They said the city’s action is unconstitutional and an attempt to suppress CBS 2’s reporting. While the report was being broadcast, a judge denied the city’s motion.

Even though the incident happened in February of 2019, COPA did not open the investigation or contact Young until nine months later when CBS 2 first broke the story online.

On Nov. 25, 2020 – more than a year since COPA began investigating – COPA said it “is still in the process of serving allegations and conducting all necessary officer interviews.”"

I saw that the other day, it absolutely made my blood boil. Remember when the police body cam technology first came out, and the police departments said "we don't want to use those! What if we have to go inside someone's house, and the camera is recording?! That's an invasion of privacy." ?

Well guess what... Those officers didn't turn off their cameras when this naked lady was on film in her own house. They only turned off the camera when it became apparent that they fucked up, and they wanted to cover their own ass.

Govt job you never get fired when you screw up! Everyone else in America has to actually use competence in their job or risk getting fired.

Bullshit platitudes thrown out by police chiefs and mayors after every incident of police brutality. Does anything ever change fundamentally? Of course not, because if it did, those platitudes would cease to exist. A big chunk of cops (aka "a few rotten apples") are former school bullies, or roided bodybuilders, or wife-beaters, or racists, or white supremacists, or mostly just stupid macho assholes devoid of any common sense, sympathy (let alone empathy), kindness, sensitivity, or tact.

#Murrca #1 - the only country where 9 cop cars with well over a dozen cops are sent to deal with a 9 yo girl, who is handcuffed and then still pepper sprayed in the face while handcuffed so she can't even wipe her face.

What a 3rd world shithole.

Government agents shouldn't be allowed to arbitrarily execute people without any real consequences. Eliminating qualified immunity and implementing a nationwide list of all cops complete with disciplinary records would go a long ways in helping the situation.
