gahh

seriously, give these men a choice between losing a pointer-finger or losing a testicle

and that's letting them off lightly

this is not nearly as bad as, but akin to, defacing the Mona Lisa (for which I would advocate burning at the stake, at least)

but when i always advocate eye-for-an-eye and execution for people who torture and rape women and children, you always get on my case. but defacing an artwork... BURN HIM!!! nice perspective you got there, dude.

[Edited on October 19, 2013 at 12:25 AM. Reason : oh, and chopping off body parts for pushing over rocks! but execution for rape is too much!]

torture =/= rape.. I abhor torture, and think that all torturers should be tortured themselves

and I also think all rapists should be raped, as a matter of fact

I admit, however, that different crimes arouse different degrees of horror in me. and I don't pretend my moral values form any cohesive whole.

but anyhow, when I get on your case, it's often not so much for the punishments that you're proposing per se, as much as the fact that you're always moralizing. I mean, you could be supporting the strongest ethical position in the world (like, you might be advocating that all Nazi war criminals should be hunted down and hanged) but if you tooted that hang-the-Nazi-war-criminals horn all the time, it would get old and annoying. even though you'd be right.

and this is particularly true since we're on the Wolfweb, a place where conventional values are supposed to be relaxed. for me, the Wolfweb is as much of a place to laugh at horrible things as it is to express horror at them, so when you do the latter all the time, it harshes my buzz, B.

dude, i never said torture == rape.

also, i bring up my viewpoint only when rape/torture cases happen, i don't go around making random comments/threads saying rapists should be executed, only in relevant threads.

so what do you want me to do, alternate my condemnation with making fun of the horrible things?

like...

rape reported: condemn it
another rape reported: laugh at it
another rape reported: condemn it
another rape reported: laugh at it

?

you go ahead and do that, since you are an expert at that, as you implied. i will keep condemning horrible things done by humans, because that's the human thing to do, and i don't give a shit if condemning horrible things irritates some 'humans'.

Actually, yes. That would be a welcome breath of fresh air from you. The next time some drunken idiot stumbles off a water tower and falls 300 feet splat to the ground, I'd like to see you make some tasteless joke ridiculing him. As long as it's a good joke, I'd applaud you for it.

I guess my point, OEP, is that you're a bit of a Debbie Downer. You're a good guy and also an intelligent one and I respect you for both those traits, but when your reaction to every rape/murder is "I hope this guy rots in hell," that gets mighty old. Such a view loses its edge and it's a totally unoriginal, obvious view to express, too. And when I can reliably count on one person to express that view - you - I tend to develop a bit of an annoyance for that person, at least when he pops up in this capacity.

Fair enough. But it's pretty ridiculous to imply (as you have done) that I'm somehow not 'human,' just because I don't share your horror at all tragedy. But meh.

that's not the same as someone getting raped or murdered. jesus dude, don't confuse issues.

if someone did actually fall of a tower in a drunken stupor, i probably would make fun of them or ridicule them. but that's not what we were talking about, and you know that.

we were talking about people hurting other people in terrible ways. i am sorry, but i can't make jokes in such situations. can you?

i can't see what other reaction is possible from any normal human being (note: rot in hell doesn't have to be literal) who hates it when people hurt other people. unoriginal and obvious? so? why do people have to come up with original views/reactions when people rape/murder other people? we are talking about rape/murder here, not some contest organized by the MIT media lab or some shit that i have to come up with something original.

good for you. but actually, I DID think that was, roughly, what we were talking about it. I thought we were discussing tragedy, and how human beings ought to react to tragedy. if you don't consider a drunk guy stumbling off a water tower to be a tragedy, then fair enough. at any rate, it's an avoidable snuffing-out of a human soul (just as a murder is).

yes.

okay, it's admirable that you feel this violent indignation whenever you hear about a rape/murder. you're a better man than me in that respect, no doubt. I guess what I meant is that you don't necessarily need to EXPRESS your indignation and horror, unless you feel it particularly strongly. if I posted, next to every picture in the 18-21 thread, "OMG that chick has such nice titties," it would get old. so I only comment when the titties are particularly nice. same deal here. that's my take, anyway.

ok, got it, but in my defense, a lot of the stories that make it to tww are of the especially horrible kind involving sexual torture, mutilation, slavery, etc, or cover-ups of serious crimes by law enforcement officials, such as the maryville, missouri case in chit chat now. but i get your point.

[yes, a drunk person falling to their death is definitely a tragedy, but we were talking about a subset of tragedies, where people hurt people, at least i was, as you can see in my very first post itt]

These guys should be ashamed of themselves and their actions. As Scout Leaders on a trip, they are supposed to be setting an example for good stewardship, especially in protected lands. If they weren't just being redneck assholes, they should have maybe filmed how loose it was and then reported it to Park Rangers. I don't think they should be drawn and quartered, and if they want to act like this on their own land then why the fuck would I care? But this was a State or national Park, so they should face some charges. It would be one thing if the guy accidentally did it, but there was forethought involved in this. As a scout leader myself, I would never think this is a good example to set for my Scouts. Fuck these guys.

^That is private land and has been approved by the EPA. Whether that is right or not is a legal issue as to what control the government can have on private property, especially as it relates to the Clean Water Act.

This is a protected Park and these two guys are representatives of the BSA. This would be like somebody from the Audobon Society going to Yellowstone and hunting Bald Eagle. "We just saved some fish". No you didn't.

2. no it wouldn't be

" Glenn Taylor — who infamously filmed his ability to knock over an ancient 2,000-pound sandstone with his bare hands — filed a lawsuit claiming "debilitating" physical injury weeks before the stunt's filming, it has been revealed.

Taylor, seen destroying a 200 million-year-old goblin sandstone formation in Utah's Goblin Valley State Park last week, filed a personal injury lawsuit last month claiming to have been disabled after a car crash four years ago.

Since that 2009 crash the Boy Scout leader claims he's "endure(d) great pain and suffering, disability, impairment, loss of joy of life," according to his lawsuit filed against the father of the then teen driver responsible for that crash.

some of these are not like the others..

a solitary rock formation of that size in that location provides nothing towards an ecosystem and has absolutely zero value to anyone or anything other than visual appreciation.

i totally understand having an appreciation for such a thing (hey, i think it was cool to look at too) but this barely warrants more than a quick smack in the back of the head to the guy. what he should be punished for is that attempt at disability fraud.

mount rushmore's incision was government-authorized vandalism. BSA may not promote environmental degradation and pollution, but they certainly engender it. even the best troops have kids mindlessly destroying shit constantly and leaving trash behind. Would have been fitting if there had been at least one finger crushed.

This is a HUGE problem, but that is what the BSA tries to help address by getting kids outdoors and to enjoy nature. My son does the same thing every other kid wants to do when they go in the woods. Pick up sticks and fight each other, or hit trees, or dig, etc. Parents and leaders should be setting a good example and showing them what responsible enjoyment of nature is, especially in a state/nationl park. Regardless of the value of that rock on a piece of dirt, those leaders set a shitty example for their kids. That is what pisses me off about it. I don't think the guys should be facing felony charges, but at least give them some fines and maybe some community service to pay back the community for them being douchebags.

well ^ for example, try to find a youtube video showing fracking activities and look at the # of times it's been viewed compared to this video

is the nationwide awareness comparable to the proportion of destruction? are coal company CEOs facing felony charges for their destruction?

nope, because it's legal and therefore pushed under the rug.
