Use the metro to get around. Look on the web to see when things open and close.

Yeah a pass for unlimited Metro is usually a good idea. There are a lot of monuments and things to see, but there are restaurants and barz and other things, too.

One thing I can say about the monuments. Go anytime after midnight. There are no crowds, the lighting is amazing, and you can really commune with the monument and often be there all by yourself. It's a much better experience.

See the monuments at night! fantastic stuff. Do the monuments by moonlight tour. I did and it was awesome even though it rained for 1/2 the tour.

Do a bike tour (bikethesites.com) or rent a bike from capital bike share to get around

Also, not to get around but I suggest doing a food tour (dcmetrofoodtours.com) lots of fun

If you rent from capital bike share, use your credit card. They require like a $50 deposit per bike. And though it is refundable, if it is on a debit card, they will hold your $$ for several days.

Biking around DC? I take it there aren't many cars in the tourist part of town? bike lanes?

I want to see the space shuttle, white house (have they restarted tours yet?), monuments, and eat some D.C specialty foods.

White House tour was pretty meh, IMO. Especially for all the hassle to get in. You just get funneled through a handful of rooms, that really aren't even that ornate (or used that often I imagine). Def better ways to spend your time.

The space shuttle isn't in the DC Air and Space building, it's out towards Dulles I think

Segway?

Please don't. People who actually live and work in DC don't want to see some idiots on segways. It's not an amusement park.

Take some comfortable shoes. DC is a "walking city." Take your own bike if you're driving. Capital Trail runs from Georgetown to Bethesda. Really nice.

Also, Über operates in DC. Beats a taxi any day of the week and pretty much the same price.
