The question actually reflects your own standards... I assume the person asking the question is about a "2".

In option #1, The partner which they are being questioned about is equally unattractive (ie. a "1", "2", or "3") and would appeal to them, but would not be attractive to the average person (aka "everyone else" or the "5"s).

In option #2, The partner they are being questioned about is perhaps a "6" to a "10" and they cannot justify even attempting dating such a highly rated partner and must crush any feelings of attractiveness immediately to avoid embarrassment and/or rejection.
