Anyone heard about this? Its been making the news rounds. Its a pseduo credit card that pairs with your phone, and stores your credit card data in the device for swiping at terminals... Effectively letting you carry multiple cards in one form factor.
I was curious enough to try it. It should ship in summer of 2014.

Hopefully, its not a total waste of money... It solves a problem, for me, though. 11/16/2013 1:34:50 PM |

I do have too much money so this seems like a good idea. 11/16/2013 2:29:46 PM |

I was talking about this with a friend the other day. Summer 2014 is too far away to make $55 an instant call for me, but when it's out I don't see myself spending $100 on it. I do like the concept. 11/16/2013 4:21:28 PM |

All the convenience will probably be negated by having to explain what it is to every damn cashier you have to hand it to. 11/16/2013 4:42:03 PM |

^^^^ thought about that. I'll charge back if its an issue. I'm not too concerned.
Regarding google wallet, I like it but you have to have an NFC terminal. Additionally, all my wallet purchases show as being through Google on my credit card statement, I don't want that.
$50 was a little pricey, yes. But i'm willing to be a guinea pig I guess. 11/16/2013 8:26:12 PM |

It lasts "about two years" before having to replace the whole thing. Non-replaceable battery kills an otherwise brilliant product for me. 11/16/2013 8:32:40 PM |

that wouldn't bother me as much if I didn't have to pay another $100 every two years. 11/16/2013 8:35:36 PM |

I'm half expecting something else to be out by then. I suspect replacements won't be $100, considering in your first kit you need to get a reader and all that. You should still have that. I wonder if it would have a better price for replacements. 11/16/2013 9:28:35 PM |

What happens when you lose it or it is stolen? Do you call and cancel all your cards? 11/16/2013 9:50:40 PM |

Q. What if I lose my Coin or someone steals it? A. In the event that your Coin loses contact with your phone for a period of time that you configure in the Coin mobile app, it will automatically deactivate itself. 11/16/2013 10:43:21 PM |

We'll all be on to something newer and better by then.

NFC's not happening. Maybe Bluetooth LE, but NFC is going nowhere fast.

I had had a credit card with nfc built in. So from a usability standpoint its faster than even using a phone. No pin/app/whatever.
The process was still so klunky, from a user experience it didn't make things better or more convenient. It took longer to register than a swipe would at the terminal. I still had to go through yes, OK, and/or signing. I never used it that way at places that had NFC terminals, because of this.
Currently I carry a money clip, it has my license, my amex, a visa, and my work badge in it. I don't really have room or desire to add more, and there's been times I wish I had my debit card. I use my my amex mostly, need my id, need my badge, so my fourth slot I have to make a choice on what I carry. I like the idea that with coin I won't have to, and can add no further steps or require additional technology.
Regarding Bluetooth le... How would this work? Sure target knows I'm in the store, I can add their app to my phone and register my accounts so I get charged... How does it know I'm at that register? What initiates the payment? I suppose a very low power Bluetooth emitter at a register that your phone has to be within inches from, but is there any concern for false payments? Maybe the phone AHS an authorize pop up? I'm legitimately asking what these systems might be, its pretty intruiging... I'm most eager to eliminate contact with sales terminals at pharmacies

I got one. Cool concept and would be very useful for those who use rewards cards with each one having different categories (i.e., grocery, gas, restaurants bonuses on different cards). Now just need to carry one card. 11/17/2013 8:23:54 PM |

But some of my cards are bad ass. You could probably kill someone with my Marriott Chase card. It's like a metal disk. No way I'm going to replace it. 11/18/2013 3:31:36 PM |
