So I've asked this question before from the Windows side, but would like to ask again from the Mac side for this year.

I'm looking for the best form of preventative protection as opposed to reactive protection. Cable router has a firewall, then my personal router has a firewall that feeds into a 128 bit encryption. But now, I need to choose virus protection when I'm browsing. Not that I browse shady sites or anything, but still, protection in the time of China, hackers, and all around online shenanigans would be nice.

Any recommendations?

I've always been told Macs are impenetrable fortresses when it comes to viruses. You should be good.

I'm glad some folks are permanently in college. Some of us had to move past that at some point if we aspired to do more with our time.

Have you looked at Sophos? They offer a free resident malware scanner for the Mac.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help; have you looked at a Mac-specific forum?

Just looking around and definitely want to give sophos a chance. My household is a bit diverse though. Is there an AV that can provide for both mac and pc... maybe in a parallels setting?

I'm looking around but not getting very many answers. I know that Kaspersky is recommended by parallels, but wouldn't want to get two accounts just to protect one desktop with two OS's...

For Windows XP to 7, just use Microsoft Security Essentials; for 8 and later, use the built-in virus-scanning capability of Windows Defender.

For Mac, try Sophos, where it's free (unfortunately its resident scanners for Windows are intended for big managed environments and far from free).
