When I plug it in I get a red ring, I don't know anything about its history, it came to me second hand and it never worked.

I've been out of the game for awhile, but I used to buy broken consoles and fix them for resale. Just a heads up, you're just too late the party. The market is flooded with 3 generations of 360's and since the Xbox 1 is set to launch today the bottom has officially dropped out on the 360 market. No one is going to buy a broken 360 to fix because they won't even be able to sell a refurbished one for $50.

If it had 2 or 3 controllers you might be able to get close to that. Without the controllers, you have a nice door stop.
