An ice storm rolled in and knocked our power out last night. We haven't opened the fridge or freezer so I was wondering how long the food should be good for. I can always put it outside but that would be a pain in the ass and if I can avoid it I will. Thank god for smart phones.

Perfect time to get the grill going and have a clean out the fridge/freezer party.

Check your home insurance, you might hav coverage for food spoilage.

We don't have a ton of food in there so I am not terribly concerned. If we don't get power tonight all the fridge stuff will go outside, I will give the freezer another day or so. It is cold as fuck in this house so I don't it is going to spoil real fast. Never had to deal with this before so I didn't know what kind of timeframe we were looking at.

If it's an ice storm, just put your stuff outside in a cooler silly!

Can you get some bags of ice and put them in there?

Left the fridge food outside in soft coolers, freezer stuff still in the freezer, had it get a hotel for the night with our two dogs. This place is full of people with dogs because it is one of the few that allows them. House was around 50 degrees when we left, they are saying it will get down to 16 tonight so there is no way we could stay. Of course the power will probably come on the minute I post this since we already dropped $150 to stay the night.

Did you remember to turn off your water?Edit: maybe I should explainif your house gets cold enough that pipes freeze they can crack, if they are cracked when the pipes thaw a small and affordable repair turns into a lot of damage and a much bigger bill. turn off the water then open everything. you won't get all of the water out without blowing it out, but you'll get most of it out and probably enough to avoid problems. (i don't know where you are though, it might not be cold enough to be an issue)[Edited on December 6, 2013 at 8:48 PM. Reason : .]

I didn't turn off the water because I am in a rental house and don't even know where the turnoff is, I did leave them all dripping though and when we went by today they ran fine so I am hoping there isn't an issue. If there is we are moving in January so hopefully it won't be too big House was 44 when I went in there, apparently they are finally getting to fixing our area so hopefully we will have power tonight. There were like 270k homes that lost power and the roads are a complete mess because there are so many over passes in Dallas.
