I was searching for some old Raleigh Icecaps jerseys and shirts on ebay and realized that there is hardly any left out there. I took it upon myself to bring some back! Help reach this small goal and get these printed!!

Change it to AA and I'd buy one. Buying shirts without knowing the brand/cut is a no-go for me these days.

Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks please. I haven't thought about the Icecaps are the skyhawks in years. Thanks for the memories. I used to enjoy going to both as a kid.

Icecaps games were awesome. The ECHL in the mid 90's was perfect for rivalries. For at least one year the Icecaps division was nothing but teams from NC and VA (Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro, Roanoke, Richmond, Hampton Roads).

Nobody should have fond memories of the Skyhawks though. They lasted one season, didn't win a single game, and attendance was shit. If you actually attended one though kudos to you, not a lot of people can say that unless they are lying.

I remember the Bullfrogs existing briefly, but I don't remember a single thing about them.

Didn't the Flyers used to play on Broughton's football field before they moved way OTB?

^^^ They were just the Raleigh Bullfrogs, not Raleigh-Durham.

I never knew this about the WLAF, the league the Skyhawks were in:
Quote :
"Rules unique to WLAF included assigning increasing point value to field goals based on distance, and a requirement that at least one player of non-US nationality participate in at least every other series of downs."

There are a surprising number of clips of Skyhawks game footage on youtube. Here's a weird promo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sd9AcPr2JU

My younger brother played for the Junior Icecaps travel team for several seasons. They wore the same jerseys as ol' Lyle in the trading card above.

I just remembered I have a Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks pennant in my closet at my parents' house. I will be bringing that back to Raleigh with me after the holidays.

I've got some Skyhawks window clings.

Also, a bunch of the Icecaps (Wildgoose, Jimmy Powers, etc.) still live around here and play rec league.

So bizarre watching someone else playing at Carter-Finley, and with Brent Musberger calling it, no less. I have a Skyhawks mini-helmet around here somwhere...went to one game. They lost (didn't they go 0-for their entire existence?) and maybe 10000 people were there.

When I lived in Roanoke, VA, we had the Roanoke Dazzle NBDL team. Anthony Grundy was there for a while.

Slogan: DAZZ RIGHT.

Reminds me also of the old ECHL rivalries. It's a shame that Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Richmond, and Roanoke all are without teams now. At the least, it would make sense for the Canes to put their ECHL affiliate in the Triad to lock down them the way they're trying to do with the Checkers and for the Caps to move theirs to Richmond (and move their AHL from Hershey to Baltimore).

Still remember Matt Delguidice(sp) in net

I think he was in EA Sports NHL 93 and was one of the worst GKs in the whole game lol

If I remember right he was on the Bruins

"The Captain" Bob Holiday with the call:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxzGN-GbrKs

So there was a guy playing for the IceCaps in the early 90s who started before the helmet rule came in? That's a long career to have been playing minor league hockey at that point.

Per Wikipedia, they were a NJ Devils affiliate, btw.

Same here. All I remember was the stadium was empty, they were playing the New York/New Jersey Knights, and as always they lost. I think I have the game program somewhere and some window stickers.

My Dad was an Icecaps season ticket holder for the first few years. Somehow he knew somebody who worked in the timekeeper/scorekeeper box and they would let me hit the switch to blow the horn that indicated there was 5 or 10 minutes left in the intermission. Eventually they gave me an ECHL Off Ice official badge. That and Mark Roberts was the PA announcer for a while which resulted in some interesting stories.

^The first year they were an affiliate of the Kings and Maple Leafs. I think after the first year they were just a Toronto affiliate (or maybe the Leafs had cut ties...) and then at some point they moved to being a New Jersey affiliate.

^had to google that. are they just a glorified rec league team?

My grandfather worked at the Burlington Industries plant in Burlington that was right beside the Burlington Athletic Park , home of the Burlington Indians. Lots of good memories of going to games with him and my dad after work when I was little.

Been meaning to make it to a Burlington Royals game the past couple years.

The problem is that in addition to owning the Canes' ECHL team, Karmanos also owns their arena, so they're not going anywhere.

^^It may not even work out as well as I'd hope anyway, especially since the ECHL has fled its old markets and a team in Greensboro wouldn't have any natural rivals (save Greenville). It's one thing for the AHL to be a national minor league in larger cities without the NHL. Lower level talent isn't going to draw as well for games between Greensboro and Ontario, CA or Kalamazoo. Part of the fun of the old ECHL was the number of teams within a few hours of each other. At one point, you had Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, Roanoke, Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Knoxville all with teams in the mid-late 90s.
