We bought a house and need to buy a fridge to go with it. They just redid the kitchen before we bought the place and I am having some issues understanding what size we can get. I would love something like this:

(I can't get the link to work if you copy and paste the whole thing it will work)
http://www.whirlpool.com/kitchen-1/refrigeration-2/refrigerators-3/-[GI0FSAXVY]-1001329/GI0FSAXVY/

Where I am having some issues is seeing if it will fit height wise. In the specifications it says the height is 70 1/8 and then it says "Height To Top Of Cabinet 68 5/8". Here is what the space for our fridge looks like:

Does "Height To Top Of Cabinet" mean that the floor to the bottom of the cabinet in the picture needs to be 68 5/8 or does it mean something completely different? Where it says the height is 70 1/8 does that mean if you include the hinge that sits on top of the fridge?

Now for my other question, we are so close to 68 5/8 but not quite there. Here is a measurement I just took:

Not even half of an inch from it being able to fit but still it looks like it is too short. Here is a picture from under the cabinet. It looks like there is definitely enough room to shave that down to get the extra half inch, is there a good way to do that without making it look like total crap? I would hate to pay someone to come out to do something so simple but I don't want to jack it up either.

Any thoughts?

68 5/8 should be just a bit more than the height of the fridge, so that should be your minimum height opening. 70 1/8 should be the height to the top of the door hinges, which are on the front and thus shouldn't be an issue; however, I will say, that the hinges may be high enough to interfere with the opening of those cabinet doors (I have that issue). Above fridge cabinets are often difficult to access (at least mine are), so I just put some stuff up there that never gets used.

You could easily sand down the cabinet to get your height. However, getting it even, if you aren't used to sanding things like this, could be a challenge (I know I couldn't get it even). I'd put some painters tape on the cabinet with the bottom of the tape at the height you need to sand to.

easy route: find another fridge

Thanks, I think I might try sanding, all the French door fridges are the same height and we have to get a whirlpool because we get a hefty discount.

Take a tape measure to to store and confirm? How far our does your cabinet protrude?

I would take the doors off the cabinet and use a series of clamps and a board to create a fence, and take a router to it. But sanding might work, hopefully you only need to take off 1/4"

Oh, for shits and giggles I looked at that fridge dimensions online just now... Cabinet heigh is not what you want. You want the cut out height. Which is 69 1/8.

There's also a dimension guide under the manuals section, complete with diagrams. I think you need to find a different fridge.

Ah, thanks I didn't even think to look at the manual to understand the heights.

So apparently cabinet height is the minimum and cut out height is what they suggest so there is some space between the fridge and the cabinet. We are just going to shave off the bottom of the cabinet, I would even rip them out since the difference in fridges is huge for such a small amount of space.
