Amazon.com

N.C. — Amazon.com confirmed Saturday it will start adding sales tax to North Carolina residents’ orders beginning Feb. 1.

In 2012 the Department of Revenue estimated that North Carolina lost as much as $214 million in online sales taxes each year.

According to Amazon.com, the amount of tax charged on an order will depend upon factors such as identity of the seller, type of item purchased and destination of the shipment.

Amazon currently collects sales tax in 19 states, including Virginia."

Well the best thing that will come from this is you can get a price match from Best Buy for a lot of stuff (and get the exact same price) but not have to wait for shipping time. Yay teh winz1?

They mean they could gain as much as 214 million in online sales tax this year.

Get out of NC while you can because that state is going to hell in a hand basket, and voters don't seem to care.

It's not because they're capitulating to NC's attempts to force their hand over the past few years. It's a change in strategy that will put Amazon distribution centers in NC thus establishing physical presence in the state.

Amazon's strategy is to push the envelope towards same day delivery, amazon lockers, etc., and they see more profit potential by doing this than not collecting taxes.

Of course, here in VA, sales tax is only 4.5%, so it's not as big of a hit as NC's ridiculous sales tax.

i think the most annoying part of this is that now i'll have to do more shopping around online. before, if amazon prime had it, it was pretty much a given that without taxes and with free shipping, there was no way i could get the item cheaper. now there's a good chance that another site that doesn't charge taxes has the item and happens to have a free shipping deal going on.

you know, that and the whole part where everything sold by amazon just went up 7%

also, does this go off of shipping address or billing address for the card? what's stopping me from opening a credit card with my friend's house in SC as the billing address and shipping to my house?

Just remember this the next time one of these douchebag Republicans try and proclaim how anti-tax they are.

Oh, but they did repeal the egregious, onerous, and job-killing estate tax that affected a staggering....wait for it....23 people!! USA! USA NC! NC!

Exaggerate much?

Folks should have been paying taxes on their online purchases at tax time. All this is going to do is force people to pay what they were already supposed to be paying. All it's doing to not giving people an option to cheat.

Would you mind explaining state taxes then and how that affects a company like Amazon?

jstpack is right. You guys have just been cheating on your use tax payments.

Why are you mad now anyway? Do you realize NC tried to get Amazon to turn over all the info they had on all of your purchases years ago? It went to federal court. Amazon won on a first amendment argument.

This is happening in most states, and the MFA will make it mandatory across the country (but it's unconstitutional but that's another story)

NC is awful, but this isn't a reason why. Please vote the idiots out of office.

^ I agree with all of that.

We knew this was coming. Just be happy you didn't have to pay sales tax for however long it lasted.

I can't wait until they outlaw tipping in restaurants.

This http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=468512 says it's based on shipping.

Are you kidding me? You're saying you actually tally up all your internet purchases where you didn't pay NC sales tax, and pay the appropriate tax to NC every year?

Also you must be trolling by downplaying this change with your "all this is going to do" and "all it's doing"

He's not saying that. He's saying it's what we all SHOULD have been doing by the letter of the law.
