Just watched TNG S4E23 last night... they introduce the Dax for the first time on the show. The trills didn't have cool spots back then apparently, but they show the symbiont!

Quote : | "The Trill hosts seen in "The Host" featured a different make-up style than the more common spots seen on Deep Space Nine. The reasons were purely cosmetic and the writers of DS9 were aware of the contradiction, but no canon explanation has ever been offered. After she had put on the Odan forehead appliance, someone looked at Terry Farrell and said to Michael Westmore, "What did you do to her head, she used to be beautiful?" Westmore then suggested to "just give her spots like we gave Famke," who played a Kriosian. This makeup was used on all Trills afterwards. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion)
However, the disparity between Trills seen on TNG and the later Trills goes beyond makeup. "The Host" seemed to make it clear that the symbiont was dominant (in fact, the symbiont is referred to as a parasite on more than one occasion), and that the host was merely a body with no influence over the joined entity. Odan was apparently unable to safely use the transporter, while Dax used it often with no trouble at all. Odan was ready to pick up where he/she and Crusher had left off, despite the Trill taboo against reassociation. " |
This is why Star Trek sucked post-Roddenberry. It was all about weekly ratings...no attempt to maintain continuity or create a believable universe.
You know what people like? Worf! We should add more Worf!
You know what people like? Wars! We should add more wars. Worf can take a vacation from the war to go fight another war.
You know what people like? Bald captains. Tell the star to shave his head. And get angry.

^ the last two seasons of ds9 were the best star trek. Roddenberry's vision was fairytale, utopian bullshit. Ds9 showed how the sausage would actually be made, it's a big galaxy and stuff is gonna get nasty 1/21/2014 3:08:44 PM

^^yep.
several species were revised after initially being introduced. I mean hell the first of which are the Klingons from the original series vs next generation klingons. Look at the Ferengi... they were envisioned as being a "big bad" TNG adversary, but they soon realized they were better for comic relief and the occasional profit-plot.
The trill introduced in TNG was supposed to be a one-off, unique alien for your typical TNG in a can episode. When they decided to introduce a main trill character, the species was slightly revised.
