As of January 1, students in California public schools have been able to choose whether to use the boys’ rest room or girls’ rest room, as well as the girls’ locker room or boys’ locker room, based on whether they feel female or male, not whether they are anatomically female or male.

That’s right: Governor Jerry Brown, of California, signed a bill that took effect January 1 that tells kids from kindergarten on that they should decide what they believe their gender identity is and act, accordingly.

The legislation also allows students to choose their sports teams based on whether they sense they are boys or girls, not whether they were born male or born female.

I'm ok with this. Gender binary is kind of silly. I always thought it odd that the boys' rooms and girls' rooms didn't account for non-hetero members of I either gender.

My understanding of boys vs girls bathroom has always been that you wouldn't want heterosexual members of opposite sexes -- ostensibly attracted to one another -- occupying the same space when not fully-clothed/decent. This binary never accounted for people who aren't heterosexual, i.e. that might be attracted to members of the same gender.

Furthermore, if a child is trans, I'm fine with he or she (etc.) using the facilities of their identified gender.

How can people not agree with that? If a person has a full fledged body (both primary and secondary sexual characteristics, or at least primary) of one gender, but s/he identifies with the other gender, there is most definitely something wrong with his/her chemicals, similar to homosexuality. Whether you call it mental illness, abnormality, or unnatural, it is definitely not normal. At the same time it is not his/her fault that god created him with messed up chemicals so s/he feels like s/he belongs to the opposite gender, again, similar to homosexuality.

Should such people be allowed to use the opposite gender's toilet? I would say no. Why should they? They have the face and genitals of one gender, but feel like they belong to the opposite. They need to seek treatment, whether medical or psychiatric. If they were to undergo a sex change treatment, then of course yes.

Intersexuals, transsexuals, and hermaphrodites, that's another story. If a person has a mix of primary and secondary sexual characteristics from both sexes, well, in that case, they should be allowed to use the toilets of the gender they identify with.

By doing this the state is probably avoiding countless lawsuits on discrimination against transgendered kids or otherwise not providing them with proper facilities. Rather than go through all the schools and ensure or retro fit individual or unisex or other specialty bathrooms they just said "fuck it, you decide where you wanna piss."

They probably just saved taxpayers BILLIONS, but won't someone please think of the children???!
