We're moving out of the country in April, and right now we can sell our car back to the bank for what it's worth and get out clean on the loan.

since the loan is through a smaller bank they wont let us take the car overseas with us, so this is the best option.

However... that leaves is down a car for 2 months. Everything I'm seeing from hertz/enterprise, etc is 500 a month, which is a far cry from the ~270 or so we pay now on her car.

The obvious answer is to hang onto the car and sell it back to them then, but we were told this would not be an option. And we'd really just like to get free of the car without having to worry about keeping track of financials back in the states while we're gone.

any ideas? most importantly anywhere I can rent a car for a moderately respectable amount.

why don't you buy a junker on craigslist and then try to sell it again for the same price (or more)?

Talk to a dealership that has a rental program and check their rates. It may be better than a rental company.

Maybe not a straight-up junker, but that's probably the best option. Buy the best high-mileage honda/toyota you can find for under $1500 (or whatever your liquid cash/comfort zone is), drive for two months, list it when you're close to moving. List it for what you paid and be ready to drop a few hundred if need be. It's a hassle but it's probably the best way to get a couple months use of a car for a couple hundred.

yeah, I didn't mean like an Uncle Buck car.

If you buy a car for $1500, I would start out listing it for $1800-$2000 (and assuming you'll end up coming down a couple hundy). Craigslist is all about finding the right buyer at the right time. Years ago I bought a nice (used) microfiber sectional on CL for $300. Used it for 3 years and sold it when I moved for $500.
