He may fall a bit. But not all 32 teams have to be on board and willing to take him. It only takes one team to draft him based on his workouts.

Meh. I don't think he falls much at all. Yeah a couple teams may be wary of the impact on team chemistry and the media hype that will come along with him, but some team like Seattle or NE will just see value in his skills and draft him. Plus whatever team does draft him will get much love from the press so it'll be like free advertising for that team.

the only advertising a team needs is winning games.

other than that, i'm not sure why this is front page news. he must have just wanted attention.

Dude was an All American and SEC DPOY so it's not like he's Brandon Mitchell trying to get a team to notice that he plays football.

Exactly, the only reason he's doing this is to draw attention to himself, which IMO, is stupid and unnecessary.

[Edited on February 10, 2014 at 10:55 AM. Reason : it is definitely not worth the front page attention it's getting]

seems to be the case for all these athletes that "come out", just an attention grab, like Tebow with his "christianity"

Supposedly people/scouts/etc were starting to wonder/gossip so he decided to speak up about it.

He didn't just pipe up out of nowhere.

Any GM that would have taken him before this but now passes on him is either stupid or believes his team is made up of retarded immature rednecks.

That said, he'll be a steal for someone in the 5th or 6th, probably somewhere like New England or Seattle or maybe Oakland since they have a history of firsts (first black coach, first Hispanic coach, etc).

A team in the biggest football conference in FBS that had a very successful season was obviously fine with this. Like I said, turn him down at your own peril if he's the best on the board.

this is men's sports. not saying there aren't plenty of open-minded and classy athletes, but there are plenty of immature, close-minded, "retarded" (or just plain dumb) ones as well. although i don't think the term "redneck" fits all of them.

ok, substitute the word "ignoramus." I don't care.

you ever considered that assuming that "men will be men" means men will be awful is pretty insulting to a whole lotta people on the whole?

more people don't care than you think.

i didn't say "men will be men". i know that there are plenty of athletes that don't care about his sexuality. however, (unfortunately) i think more care than you think.

The twist will be that there's been loads of gay sex in every NFL locker room all these years.

His teammates at Mizzou had no issue at all with sexuality. What's different about the nfl? More close mindedness?

There's plenty of average americans that feel this way, and I imagine there's a higher percentage in sports, particularly football.

Yes. He told them all before the season started.

edsbs on point here

Quote :
"There are a lot of total strangers who consider themselves involved in Michael Sam's coming out story.

The first total stranger might be THE PERSON WHO ASSUMES THIS IS ABOUT THEM. This person is most likely the one seen saying "Why is this news," a piece of code that means, "Please don't talk about your gayness around me." They surely weren't running around Facebook last year tagging your shared video of Felix Baumgartner jumping from a space balloon with the same fervor, or doing this about other news. If they were, kudos to them for consistency, and for posting "WHY IS THIS NEWS BABIES ARE BORN EVERY DAY" under the pictures of your newborn you posted last year.

This is all news, because Michael Sam is the first openly gay man to enter the NFL Draft as someone likely to be drafted, and also because being gay is still the subject of some really archaic laws still on the books in a number of these United States. "Only the media cares," says someone who clearly is protesting too much, and would love to take the opportunity to tell you at length how much they do not at all care."

he was the best player on that team so they had to respect him. it will be different when he is a rookie in the nfl.

a lot of players have said they would not be in the same locker room with a gay guy. he came out to protect himself from ending up on a team that has that culture.

It's sad that anonymous NFL execs and front office would let that kind of bigotry dictate their personnel decisions.

How is that kind of thinking different from racial prejudices in the locker room? Get over it or get the hell out.

I find the "locker room culture" excuse of discrimination hilarious.

Like, "naw man, I can't shower with a gay man, that shit is gross!...but a straight guy? Fuck it, yo. Let's get soapy and have a party!"

The entire concept of male camaraderie practically survives off of latent homosexual behavior, anyway. So I don't really see the big fucking deal, here.

not saying i agree, but most women don't want straight men to shower with them at the gym.

but a gay man is a man, and not a woman

and gay men have always showered with straight men

seems like there were no locker room issues in Missouri this past season, probably because they were able to understand that this "argument" is asinine

see with gay marriage i can see why its a big deal. it's because gay men are super promiscuous and people don't want the sanctity of marriage being marred by promiscuity.

But most all athletes are promiscuous so i dont see why it'd be a big deal.

I bet Philip Jesus Rivers is scared of getting sacked by his sac though

Plenty of women have no problem going to male gynecologists. And that's a much more intimate experience than, say, sharing a locker room with a gay man.

I never heard anyone complain about sharing a locker room with Ray Lewis, maybe they thought he'd murder them too...since he's s murderer. Steelers didn't seem too distracted with Big Ben's affinity for rapes.

Even though there has never been an openly gay player in the country's most popular professional sports league, this guy coming out right now is not "groundbreaking" because I've seen stories about gay people on my local news having parades and not being able to get married or some other queer shit I didn't consider news at the time either.

People who wish/think this shouldn't be a big story or important are misguided. It has to be a big deal today if it's going to be no big deal tomorrow.

It was a big deal when Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic, but now thousands of people do it every day.
