Best: Breaking Bad, Futurama
Worst: Dexter

The end of Spartacus was pretty good, even though history is the worst spoiler ever.

Prison Break had a pretty good finale

and to echo what others have said, BB was definitely good, and Dexter was definitely bad

Best: Quantum Leap, even though he never made it home I've probably watched that series finale more times than any other

Worst: Dexter, invested way too much time for that crappy ending

The BSG family was worse than AIDS. Breaking Bad was pretty great, and I loved the (original) Futurama finale. I think LOST gets a lot more hate than it deserves. It wasn't what I wanted, but except for that dumb-ass stained glass window I thought it was pretty good.

The FLCL and Cowboy Bebop finales were pretty great, although I don't know if that shit counts because Japan. And speaking of Japan, the original Neon Genesis Evangelion ending was so bad the creator got death threats.

The biggest problem for TV finales in general is that most shows will go on as long as they get viewers, so by the time they have to end the show's already shitty. That, or the show's great, but HBO tells people after it's too late that their shit has been canceled. I stay awake nights thinking about the Deadwood and Carnivále finales that could have been.

Freaks and Geeks...I don't even want to talk about that.

OMG how did I forget the Home Movies finale. So so good.

I haven't seen the Six Feet Under finale since it aired but remember really liking it except for the shitty makeup when everybody got older. And that was back in SD times.

A fine thread I do say. Allow me to take this moment to rant about how bad Lost was.

Lost = Worst Series Finale of all time.

During the later seasons it was becoming clear that the writers were just dragging out the series, so the show was already in decline.

What made the finale terrible specifically, was that it officially ended any possibility of resolution... any closure or explanation to the mysteries. Throughout season 6, I thought to myself, this shit is just stupid, but maybe they just have to throw in filler until the finale when they resolve this shit... nah brah.

The entire show was based off the mystery of the island, every season finale the writers would throw in little clues and hints... one would think from the start that there was a clever ending... that the writers had some sort of plan from the start of the series. Halfway through the series I would enjoy reading forums that would speculate and guess about the story of the island based off the clues presented thus far... these "Lost Theories" from fans were way better than what the writers ended the series on.

A testament to how shitty the writing was, is that as I look through the lost wiki, there aren't any real spoilers that I could drop to season 1 viewers that would annoy them. Looking through the lost wiki now, there is still so much stuff that isn't clear or answered, you realize the majority of the show was just irrelevant and thrown in for cheap drama before commercial breaks. The Lost series finale is where everyone is confronted with this harsh reality.

best:

futurama (robot devil's hands) might be my favorite

home movies is great

newhart

the ones i don't like mostly have to do with them being non-finale finales:

bunheads

sports night

freaks & geeks (fantastic episode, but i hate hippies)

Worst: Carnivale (because there wasn't a series finale)

Geez, I've kinda forgotten how Twin Peaks ends. I think it's about time I watch that series again.

Best: Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under, The Wire

Worst: LOST, Freaks and Geeks

I'm also just disappointed with shows that got cancelled before they knew to make a true finale episode, like Pushing Daisies, Deadwood, etc

Though that isn't really their fault

Yes. Low rating show that was on borrowed time ending the 6th season a cliff hanger when they had ample time to end it well. Ugh.

i agree with this. the network jerked the writers around for a few years. season 4 was during the writers' strike. i think it would've been really hard to do a much better job.

Best: Cheers, TNG, DS9, St. Elsewhere, Dinosaurs, the first Futurama finale
Worst: The X-Files

I've never disliked the BSG finale as much as most people. It's emotionally satisfying, but not intellectually satisfying.

And while I would gladly accept more Deadwood, the ending isn't as infuriating as those of some other cancelled shows.

Can't wait for the internet to implode over the Game of Thrones finale in a few years.

really bad: Star Trek Enterprise - especially after the resurgence of the quality of the series over the last season. (it all has to do with the executives)

No, they knew it would be over. They actually shot it third or fourth from last so it'd be done if they yanked the budget and had to stop production.

Going old school
Best: Cheers, The Wonder Years, and Miami Vice = The scene at the end where Crockett offers to drive Tubbs to the airport and says "I'm gonna miss you man" to which Rico responds softly "I'm gonna miss you too Sonny" =

how has Scrubs not been mentioned in this thread?

Let's not even bring up the season 9 med school season. Season 8's 2 part My Finale was incredible and exactly the way a show should end.

Best: Friday Night Lights

Just a perfect hour of television.

The worst are the shows that don't know they're going to get canceled during the off-season and leave their season finales on a cliffhanger.

Quote :
"In the season's final episode, Roseanne reveals the entire series itself is actually a story written by Roseanne Conner about her life. To cope, Roseanne twisted major elements of her life for the story, which the audience does not find out until the final moments of the series. In reality, Dan's heart attack was fatal and the Conner family did not win the lottery. Also, Jackie is a lesbian and Beverly is straight. Another difference is that David and Becky were a couple all along, as were Mark and Darlene, rather than the opposite (Becky with Mark and Darlene with David)."

Fringe had a pretty memorable ending, and I'll go ahead and put Justified on the list for next year.

How about Dr Who Regenerations? Would those count? If so, Tennant's was badass.
