Say you hit a kid in Detroit but youre in a bad section of town and you fear for your life. Can you just call the police and give them a heads up?

A woman my mother knows was driving down our street and saw two young kids, maybe toddler age 4 or so, playing very close to the road. She stopped and took them to their house and told their parents they were super close to the road. On her way back home the same kids were back out there and the girl ran out in front of her car and she hit and killed her. The family (a large Mexican family) all came out and started beating on her windows and threatening her. She drove about 100 yards away to the feed store to call 911 and she was charged with a hit and run. No idea if she was convicted though.

Protect the safety of yourself and your passengers first. As long as you had a reason to feel threatened and you didn't actually try to flee in the traditional sense a good lawyer can handle the rest.

Alexian Lien ran over a dude that had gotten off his bike to help his buddy that Lien also hit. He fled and the whole thing happened in front of a cop, no charges filed.
