Yes, people do die quite often at large events like this.

all marathon and mud run selfies should be required to include a completion time, simply participating shouldn't be good enough

The fact that marathons have become a trendy symbol of good fitness encourages out of shape average joes and soccer moms to run, just so they can slap a 26.2 sticker on their bumper. It's really sad to me that people regularly die from doing these extreme events.

^^^Not likely. People that do these races all the time can do long term damage to their hearts. I doubt it was some fat guys that just dropped dead.

I didn't realize we had so many medical doctors, as well as certified experts on fatalities at sponsored street races.

Apparently it's also possible to determine cause of death from reading news articles.

This is truly a blessed community.

fatties don't die because they don't have endurance to keep running, they run for about 20 minutes then walk the rest and then pose for pictures and buy 13.1 bumper stickers and ignore that it took them 12 hours

I worked the 2nd to last water station on the course....

Pretty sure I saw one of the guys on the medic cart. He was stumbling when he came by my area, then was riding back on the cart about 30 min later with his head slumped over.

Saw more non-fat peeps walking which was surprising to me.

people were pushing themselves too as i believe this was the last qualifier for Boston

it was pretty hot by the time the full started. it was perfect weather for the 1/2

lots of people i know that ran said the course was brutal with all the hills. I feel for those that had did the full and had to run down the Edwards Mills hills ...

I was in Dorthea Dix park on a major hill...I felt so bad for the runners. I saw both half and full folks pass by my station.

I did the half. the hills were pretty brutal, especially if you didn't train / prepare. the weather wasn't bad for the half and I passed by one of the people that died at the final straightaway towards the finish line. It would definitely suck to see the finish line and die before you cross it.

I've just seen a few mentions here and in the media about how they were so close to finishing, and how much that sucks that they didn't finish first...while from my vantage point, the thing that sucks is the dying part, and the lack of finishing doesn't really matter. to each his own i guess

from my vantage point it doesn't suck to die because they are dead and so can't possibly care. from my vantage point it sucks for the family though, and some of them might think about how close they came. also, from my vantage point, synapse is determined to argue about trivial things.

I'll jump in on this and side with synapse. I really think the dying part would suck much worse than "to see the finish line and die before you cross it".

FYI, I died once, and it wasn't really that bad. It stung a little, and smelled like bacon. Plus, I got to come back as a bitchin ghost that does all sorts of ill shit....but I mostly just go to work every day.

If you mean Boston 2014 then no. That race is full. Boston 2015 doesn't start registration until next September and there are plenty of races between now and the cut off. (The window started September 14, 2013)

Yeah, I remember that water stop. That hill was insane. Plus I think most people walk through water stations anyways. I definitely learned to train for the hills in Raleigh. yay for hill repeats

That hill at Lenoir though. Jesus, everyone around me groaned when that came into view.

No matter what athletic ability, "fat" or "non-fat", everyone should get checked out by a doctor before training and running these types of distances. And I prefer drinking to thirst and listening to your body instead of over-drinking and messing with electrolytes and salt tabs. (not that the deceased runners might have done this, I just know a couple of people that messed around too much with "adjusting" electrolytes)

On second thought, I may not have died. I might have just had some greasd splatter on me while cooking bacon.

it takes running a marathon to realize that you can easily die from one if you don't train for it adequately. These things can be a huge health risk if you are underprepared, and they are over promoted to profit off of entrance fees.

A doctor isn't going to find some congenital heart disease during a physical. They certainly aren't going to know in advance if your heart is going to crap out in the middle of a race. There's just an inherent risk when you push yourself to the limits in this manner.

http://www.active.com/articles/new-study-cites-link-between-marathon-running-and-some-heart-attack-factors

Quote :
"Marathon running may trigger a cascade of potentially heart-damaging events, as reported by McLean Hospital researchers in back-to-back papers in the Oct. 17 American Journal of Cardiology.
Dr. Arthur Siegel, director of Internal Medicine at McLean, and his collaborators analyzed the blood of marathoners less than 24 hours after finishing a race and found abnormally high levels of inflammatory and clotting factors of the kind that are known to set the stage for heart attack.

"My concern is for people who exercise thinking 'more is better,' and that marathon running will provide ultimate protection against heart disease," Siegel said. "In fact, it can set off a cascade of events that may transiently increase the risk for acute cardiac events.""

The marathon as the ultimate metric of health and fitness is bullshit. And, yet, if you were to do a series of man on the street interviews asking "what makes a person 'fit'", a significant percentage of people would point to the ability to complete a marathon as an example.

If people knew that training and running a marathon wasn't making them any healthier compared to training/running smaller distances, would you have 10,000 (mostly amateur) runners still showing up to the events?

^ I don't think it's even about people equating marathon running with health. It's mostly people (especially women, I've noticed) that see running a marathon as a "bucket list" thing and (more importantly) something to subtly brag about.

Why are y'all making fun of fatties running. At least they are making an effort to participate in exercise. Athletic people drop dead from cardiac problems out of no where too. One of these days I'll stop whistling at the MCFD when they run by and join them...it's just too much fun sitting in the front porch drinking beer and smoking a cigarette instead.

^^ I also don't know about that. You can train yourself to death as well going for a sub 16 minute 5 K. I think that it is all about dedictating yourself to an approach and setting realistic goals. The U.S. is full of elite D-I athletes that would smoke most amateur marathoners, but since their bodies are sufficiently conditioned they put themselves at less risk than some 30 + year old that decides he wants to give Boston a shot.

Also, certain body types are just better than others, so you have to stick with what is a realistic goal.

You see, I'm a realist..... So I would never run a marathon. With running that long of a distance, and taking that many steps.... the odds of me tripping over my penis and falling down and really injuring myself increases exponentially.

Didn't some 16 year old athlete recently die of cardiac arrest after running a half marathon in VA beach? Is there any way to find out ahead of time about lurking heart problems before running one of these? During proper training would it be possible to identify symptoms or anything?
