I would argue it does more harm to the country to allow/encourage this.

It makes us look worse and it only encourages more hatred and bloodlust to our enemies along with, you know, not being proven to even work..

Really though, we need to get back to more important things... like the war on Christmas.

ps: simply saying "torture is awful and never produces reliable intelligence so we should never do it" does not equal "bashing our country"

Torture, literally by definition, is a heinous act.

It's why Bush tried to rebrand it "enhanced interrogation", because to call it torture means they know it was excessive and born of viciousness and brutality.

As a civilized country, we're supposed to rise above emotion and act with justness and fairness. If you think we should indulge our fear and anger and hatred to inflict unnecessary suffering and pain, you are literally no better than Al-Qaeda or the Taliban or any suicide bomber.

I'd like to know who you think is bashing our country ITT, and how. Are you saying that we shouldn't criticize the CIA for torturing people?

There's really nothing I can say to sway the bleeding hearts in here. Thankfully you're not the ones in charge of our intelligence operations.

"experts"

is it really that difficult to be up to date enough on a subject before claiming to know what you're talking about?

haha, you ignore the experts when it comes to climate change, but now claim you want to listen to "the experts" on torture?

You realize most "experts" are actually against torture?

Even if you assume that torture did work, which no evidence exists suggest it does (it's just gratuitous hate and malice-- similar to cutting off a head or suicide bombing a school), that still doesn't justify it, anymore than stopping terrorism should justify mass spying, warrantless searches, etc..

the "experts" who are against torture have an agenda and are adjusting data

^^^^I haven't read the whole report which I have no problem admitting. And I was pretty clear that I was referring to intelligence experts, of which interrogation is part.

But dragging the beaten horse of AGW into this? lol. Good one. I'll still be laughing 18 years from now, when the earth still hasn't increased in temp, and after all governments have abandoned any attempt to reduce their CO2 emissions.

dragging your position on agw into this is pretty relevant. you disagree with the vast, vast, vast majority of experts (scientists) on that issue, but defer to the "experts" here? are you certrain you'll still be laughing in 18 years? you sound very confident about something that you don't have the intelligence to know (and I don't mean that you're stupid, i mean that i'm confident you haven't read all the information that's available, done the research, etc. to really have an informed opinion)

Weird how conservatives will slam every government organization except for the military.

USPS, EPA, Medicare - all examples of government ineptitude

but the CIA shoving hummus up someone's ass? "I'll leave this one up to the experts"

A big part of it is the legal implication of it being "torture". So, uhh, it's not torture, guys.

Pat, I don't think you can play that card on torture when you so flagrantly claim it to be invalid on climate change.

...and while my position on this issue, like almost all others, is "it depends", I think that we could, for practical purposes, put me in the "opposed" camp. I really don't think I'm a "bleeding heart" liberal who likes to bash America and doesn't support our intelligence operations.

Yep, that's a conversation I've had with my dad a few times. I think he mostly "gets it" now. The military is just as fucked up, dysfunctional, and inefficient as every other government bureaucracy. That its role is much more within the proper domain of the federal government to begin with, and private and/or decentralized alternatives aren't really viable, are significant distinctions...but don't think for a second that the military isn't a clusterfuck. Hell, we invented the term.

I think maybe I addressed this in another thread, but I don't think those dudes were hired to be interrogators, or for specialized knowledge of al Qaeda, or counterterrorism, or linguistics. That really has nothing to do with much of anything. They were psychologists from military SERE schools, where, among other things like not eating for a week, people like me are subjected to "enhanced interrogation techniques". They were hired as consultants based on their previous observation of and expertise in the effects of EITs.

[Edited on December 19, 2014 at 3:07 AM. Reason : just saw several goddamn hippies jumped on the climate change thing. sorry dude, but that's totally valid.]
