I got the impression from something I read that the inheritance was to fall to the kids, and the wife had incentive to keep him alive as long as possible for that reason and was attempting to get control of more of his assets.

It looks like the wife was not providing him with the best care. The kids seem to have financial incentive to let him go however so the whole thing looks bad on all parties.
