Everyone seems to really despise this chick, so here's a place to post your contempt.

i'm guessing that people despise her because she's attractive and thin. while i'm guessing most of the food enthusiasts who come across her articles are (unsurprisingly) large and they jelly.

My wife and I have made a conscious effort to learn more about healthy diets and lifestyles so that we can do a better job of teaching our children about healthy living than our parents did for us.

That said, we tend to immediately ignore food and exercise advice from anyone without either an advanced degree in the field they advise in, or (too an extent) an extensive background in investigative journalism.

I have yet to find a blogger, TV persona or celebrity that has the qualifications to offer meaningful advice.

http://foodbabe.com/2012/07/30/why-its-time-to-throw-out-your-microwave/

Quote :
"water that was microwaved did not form beautiful crystals – but instead formed crystals similar to those formed when exposed to negative thoughts or beliefs. If this is happening to just water – I can only imagine what a microwave is doing to the nutrients, energy of our food and to our bodies when we consume microwaved food. For the experiment pictured above, microwaved water produced a similar physical structure to when the words “satan” and “hitler” were repeatedly exposed to the water. "

people hate her because she doesn't really have the background to comment on a lot of the ingredients she thinks are evil

a lot of them are GRAS ingredients used in far less quantities than would ever harm you

not that she would care about the FDA's studies on food additives, of course

I am very vaguely familiar with her. Just looking more into her now.

Regardless of her belief that water assumes the same shape if microwaved as it does when exposed to the words hitler and satan, seems like she has accomplished more for the public good than the vast majority will ever accomplish:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vani_Hari#Chick-fil-A
Quote :
"In large part because of Hari's efforts, Chick-fil-A announced in late 2013 they were removing dyes, artificial corn syrup, and TBHQ from their products along with announcing a plan to only use antibiotic free chickens within the next five years."

Quote :
" In March 2013, as a result of Hari's efforts, Chipotle published its full ingredients list on all menu items, including where Chipotle uses GMOs."

Quote :
"Hari's campaign received worldwide media coverage, and after seven months of communication, Kraft responded by removing the dye from all their products aimed at children."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vani_Hari#Subway
Quote :
"Subway, the world's largest sandwich chain, quickly responded by announcing a plan to remove the chemical from all of their sandwich breads. Additionally Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Publix Grocery Store announced they would remove the chemical as well."

I'm not aware of evidence that any of those changes will ostensibly benefit the public good. The fact that those companies yielded to the manufactured negative publicity don't validate the claims that they are "bad."

I think logically we can all deduce that fruits, vegetables, and meats that have as little happen between harvest/butchering and consumption bear the least risk of short or long term adverse effects.

That said, with the global population where it is, and the fact that humans are not subsistence farmers, completely eliminating the processing that's done to grow food and get it to people is logistically impossible. The important question is what's truly harmful for consumption and what isn't.

People like the foodbabe live in a fantasy world where 6 billion people can be fed without the benefits of modern science to boost crop yields, resist infestations, have a longer shelf life, etc. It's entirely possible that some company may cut a corner to save a fraction of a cent on some process and infuse food with something that is actually harmful. The shit she spouts is the equivalent of crying wolf, and if she happens to be right about something down the road, she's already spent her credibility on bullshit claims.

what is "artificial corn syrup?"

If it's high fructose corn syrup, why not just call it that?

Also, advocating for "healthier" fast food is total bullshit. I'm sure millions of American's will be SOOOOO much healthier because they're eating 1,500 calories 3 times a day with non GMO tomatoes.

^^ there is a difference between chemicals used to increase yields, shelf life, etc., and chemicals used as artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, texturizers, and smells. those should be eliminated from food, and it is good that she was able to have big corps eliminate such chemicals (the 2ng group), as well as make them make their ingredients lists public so that people can make informed decisions.

^ yes, HFCS. i don't know why wikipedia is calling artificial corn syrup.

While both schools of thought are pretty misplaced The leap from GMO to "danger food" is not quite as great as the leap from God to anti-science.

Plus, being very knowledgeable about a handful of topics doesn't mean someone's immune from stupid thinking.

http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2014/02/21/mike-adams-the-yoga-mat-chemical-and-the-chemical-apocalypse/

Quote :
"This is the dumbest form of “guilt-by-association” I’ve ever heard from a quack. Seriously, Mike, what’s wrong with yoga mats? Don’t you like yoga? Or do you only use natural, organic yoga mats made only from all-natural materials, like cotton. (If that’s the case, I hope you wash them regularly. All that sweat from a good yoga workout. Yuck.) Certain basic chemicals are used for lots of purposes, ranging from industrial uses to plastics to pharmaceuticals to foods. In this case, the the chemical, azodicarbonamide, is what’s known as a maturing agent. Basically, when it’s added to flour, it makes bread dough rise better. It also improves the handling properties of doughs, yielding drier, more cohesive doughs that are more pliable, hold together better during kneading, and machine better.

Moreover, azodicarbonamide arguably not even in the final product. According to this article, once flour is wetted with water, reaction with azodicarbonamide with the constituents of flour is rapid. In the experiments described, it only took 30 minutes for all the azodicarbonamide to disappear, with trace amounts left. By 45 minutes, there weren’t even trace amounts left."

I've had a hard time swallowing the paleo diet fad because most of the people I've met that follow it aren't exactly who I would consider "healthy" and tend to jump from diet to diet to diet looking for the magic bullet.

They mostly call what they are doing paleo because it draws more people to the site. Sarah (the paleo mom) focuses on intestinal wellness and that just happens to line up best with paleo. She advocates eating white rice in some instances (especially for those with thyroid problems, you need starch for proper thyroid function), and some other things that are not normally paleo but won't cause you harm. Then there are other "paleo" things (like cured meats) that aren't really good for you and she suggests limiting them.

Cordain also focuses on optimizing health and healing the body with food but has a broader focus. http://thepaleodiet.com/nutritional-basics-of-the-paleo-diet/

Grass fed beef has a better omega 3:6 ratio and some other beneficial fatty acids. http://chriskresser.com/why-grass-fed-trumps-grain-fed

And then at the very first link posted trying to demonize red meat, there is a study mentioned that shows that eating high fiber helps reduce the "bad" compounds that they found. I'm going to blame this on a lack of fiber and not normal amounts of meat (the study fed the people 14oz of red meat a day, every day). http://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/Red-meat-and-colon-cancer.shtml This was also using conventionally farmed meat, which has less omega 3 which is known to be anti-inflammatory and may have changed the results.

"Scientists from England have offered a new explanation. Their investigation recruited healthy volunteers. The volunteers ate one of three test diets for a period of 15 to 21 days. The first diet contained about 14 ounces of red meat a day, always prepared to minimize HCA formation. The second diet was strictly vegetarian, and the third contained large amounts of both red meat and dietary fiber.

Stool specimens from the 21 volunteers who consumed the high-meat diet contained high levels of N-nitroso compounds (NOCs), which are potentially cancer-causing chemicals. The 12 volunteers who ate vegetarian food excreted low levels of NOCs, and the 13 who ate meat and high-fiber diets produced intermediate amounts.

These results are interesting enough on their own, but the researchers went one step further. They were able to retrieve cells from the lining of the colon that are shed into the stool. The cells from people eating the high-meat diet contained a large number of cells that had NOC-induced DNA changes; the stools of vegetarians had the lowest number of cells with damaged genetic material, and the people who ate high-meat, high-fiber diets produced intermediate numbers of damaged cells."
TLDR: Don't eat a lb of steak a day without any fiber.

she's attractive and that is likely why she ever gained any traction. some women like other attractive, fit women because they want to be like them and men like them because we want to be in them. this leads to a ground swell in users and with users comes publication. she's easy on the eyes, so networks like providing her air time.

now on to her points of view, i'm not backing her but i'm also not against her. ultimately, i can't say that she does any more harm than good, so railing against her doesn't seem merited. now, if i found out all of her crusading were to cause higher costs for companies and they were passing those onto the consumer that would be a different story.

with all that said, i'd never date or marry because shes definitely got to be a chore to hang around, even if she is presumably great in the sack (all the really crazy ones are).
