Who are you backing for 2016? Please only use candidates who are running or are rumored to run.

A third term for Obama will be nice. He's really on fire lately, and will likely hit his stride in year 9.

Honestly, I'd like to see Mitt run again...I've heard rumors, so it's valid for this thread. The country needs a middle-of-the-road candidate, and we aren't going to get that from Cruz, Paul, or any other tea party candidate. I'm tired of the tea party saying that the Republicans have to run far-right to win. That's BS.

Obviously I'd like to see Hillary bow out, but if she does, some new Obama type might come out of left field and sweep the Democrats off their feet. Maybe we can work the system and let Bill run again.

So assuming you like science and the issues Tyson advocates, what is the Gary Johnson climate change plan?

Mitt isn't even the best Mormon, Republicans should run Jon Huntsman

He doesn't deny that our carbon emissions are causing warming, but doesn't really have a plan to address it. He's not opposed to the EPA.

Seems like that's a pretty big thing to believe in and have no plan for. I wasn't aware of the Libertarian Party supporting the EPA.

Bigger fish to fry. And fish we can fry without China doing whatever the fuck it wants anyway. Gary Johnson != The Libertarian Party.

Quoting Gary Johnson:
Quote :
"Government exists to protect us against individuals, groups, and corporations that would do us harm. Rules and regulations should exist to accommodate this. The EPA protects us against those that would pollute, and without them a lot more polluters would be allowed to pollute."

Brian Schweitzer

Former democratic governor of red/libertarian Montana. Kept the state's finances in the green, attempted to pass single payer in the state, and vetoed the shit out of their wacky congress. Also "reasonably" pro-gun and has been stumping for veterans rights lately. He was kinda rumored to run, but I think has been backing away

Elizabeth Warren

Idiots in our right-wing media think that Obama was a progressive president. Let's give them a progressive president.

Also Martin O'Malley

Guv of Maryland, decriminalized weed, got gay marriage to pass in a referendum, closed some prisons that were known to be shitty, had to do some delicate balancing to get Maryland's finances out of the recession.

I'd like to see Clinton, O'Malley, Schweitzer, and Warren in a debate, that's a pretty big range of views for just one party. They would probably make Clinton look like the moderate conservative that she is.

^^^^that broad is off the reservation.

My picks would be Jon Huntsman or Gary Johnson. Ideologically, I'm between the two of them, but probably somewhat closer to Gary Johnson. Jon Huntsman wins points for being a real-world pragmatist and has the experience and proper presentation for the national/world stage (although Johnson would be fine on the latter part if he'd just dress the part).

Of course, all of that is moot; neither of them will be significant contenders if they even run again at all, and I will probably end up writing in "no confidence" or "none of the above" just like I have every time since 2000.

Other than Hillary, who are the democratic options?

Between Climate Change, the impending AI revolution, and potentially disastrous inequality, I don't see how any of the normal conservative ideologies can be helpful to America in the upcoming years.

Maybe when it comes to globalization, the right might do some good (good, as in more globalization).

Does it really matter?

I've lost all hope that any one person can get us in the right direction.

If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on a Dem. It will be 12-16 years before another Republican will be in office (since Bush).

I'd go with Jeb Bush well before I would do Santorum, Ryan or Paul.

When I consider the dems, I have a hard time picking someone who interests me at the moment.

As long as someone isn't a bigot (i.e. advocate for 100% equality for homosexuals), has a comprehensive plan to reduce spending, and isn't a warhawk then they'll have a good chance to get my vote.

I hope that the D primary field will be relevant enough that I'll choose to vote in that one. There are plenty of people I would gladly vote for over Hillary.

If Huntsman (or someone like him) is viable, I'll vote in the R primary. I agree that the Republican primaries matter more, due to their ongoing slow self-destruction. The problem is that most of their candidates are equally bad.

I'm not voting for everyone that considers CO2 a dangerous pollutant and feels like the EPA should regulate it.

Looking at all of the candidates from either party, Jon Huntsman is still the guy that stands out to me as someone I'd like to see in the white house. Duke nailed all of the reasons I support the guy.

Huntsman puts on a nice socially progressive act, but his economic policy is no different than any current establishment Republican. He's a slightly less offensive Romney.

I would hope for someone with a scientific or engineering background to be our next President, but there is basically no chance of that ever happening.
