Quote : | "Reports said the fight at Sikhism's holiest shrine was over who would speak first at the ceremony and that a scuffle broke out over a microphone." |
LOL at religious people logic.
India killed Sikhs at the Golden Temple in 1984.
Sikhs: "Hey, let's hold a solemn ceremony at the Golden Temple for the 20th anniversary of the massacre"
What happened: Sikhs break out swords during a fight over who would speak first at the ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the massacre of Sikhs by non-Sikhs.

So, are they going to mark the anniversary of this incident from now on at the Golden Temple as well? The day when sikhs nearly slaughtered each other while marking the day when non-sikhs slaughtered sikhs...
They should! 6/6/2014 8:56:25 PM

That's what I thought too, until I looked them up a couple years ago.
Quote : | "Punjab (/pʌnˈdʒɑːb/; Punjabi: ਪੰਜਾਬ), also spelt Panjab, is a state in the northwest of the Republic of India, forming part of the larger Punjab region." | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punjab_(India)
Quote : | "A Sikh (/siːk, sɪk/; Punjabi: ਸਿੱਖ sikkh [sɪkkʰ]) is a follower of Sikhism, a monotheistic religion that originated in the 15th century in the Punjab region." | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikh
so "seek" is an acceptable alternative pronunciation, but the most correct one is like "sick"

the correct pronunciation is "sikh", as in, you need to make the "kh" sound, which doesn't exist in english. and it is not the same as the sound of the letter found in arabic and other related languages which is transliterated as "kh" in to english, as in the names "khan" and "khatami" (iranian leader), or the arabic words "khalas" (finished) and "khair" (good). that's a single sound which comes from the throat, whereas the "kh" in "sikh" is pronounced with the sounds of k and h merged together, but both sounds still recongnizable, and that sound comes from the top and back of the mouth. 6/9/2014 12:07:44 AM

so I guess the proper IPA would be [q] (unvoiced uvular plosive) for that sound (my understanding is that in Arabic at least, that's the letter used to transliterate that sound into Latin characters, so that's why the IPA uses it) 6/9/2014 6:38:17 AM
