Vermaelen to United? He was good before he got injured but, like Vertonghen, is overrated because he bombs forward and scores some goals. Certainly nowhere near the defensive prowess as the two he couldn't get a game over.

Upgrade on last year should it happen for United but I think they can and should do better..

Depending on the fee its not a bad deal at all. Cheap (hopefully), experienced, and clearly has the ability. This gives Jones and Evans time to develop a partnership and if that doesn't work Vermaelen is a stop gap till next year. The man is a professional and won't complain about being relegated to the bench.

More importantly he is a left footed center half who can move forward. Van Gaal likes them. This would be a great move if United can sign a defensive midfielder who can work in tandem with the CB's to provide cover. Carrick wasn't himself last year and someone like Scwienstieger would be perfect to pair with Carrick.
