First off the obligatory "sorry if this is in the wrong category or there is an existing thread" pre-apology. I know this has been discussed somewhat in other threads but I didn't see anything fully dedicated to it.

Anyways, I wanted a place to discuss all the new non-traditional fabric dress clothes out there. Who's got them, tried them, etc? Also before I go further can we keep the arguments about whether people into this stuff should just grow up and wear regular clothes out of here? That's been argued to death already. Yes I realize this is chit chat and open to all types of shitty comments...anyways...

They're awesome. Totally comfortable, and the nike swoosh is the same color as the pants, so its not very noticeable. I work in finance, business casual environment, where most people are wearing button downs. I've been coming to work in these pants and golf shirts for the past few years and haven't had a problem yet.

On a similar note, I need some extra boring clothes that require minimal care outside of washing. But I'm fine with cotton and whatnot. If anybody can vouch for some wrinkle-free stuff, please do.

Bonobos dress clothes are insanely comfortable and personally I have found them expertly tailored for off-the-rack clothes (though YMMV as it often does for the cut of clothes).

I feel very fortunate in my workplace... I wear jeans and a polo most days and that is considered kinda dressing up. There is a dude that comes to work in jean shorts, a tshirt, and sandals just about every day in the summer and nobody thinks twice about it.

A couple reviews on them said they were only noticeable to people who had been told about it and went in for a closer looks. I generally run hot, so these might not be for me...but who knows, I live in NY so they could come in handy on some frigid days

Yeah I strictly wear golf shirts to work, which is why the price on these ones I posted is a bit high... but I figure to have one shirt that I won't hate wearing to all weddings or other events where I have to wear a suit or button down might be worth a hundred bucks

I emailed the Ministry of Supply people asking which of their two shirts would be better for someone that's mostly concerned about being hot and uncomfortable, and also asked if they were making a suit for good measure. Here's what I got back:

Update on the shirt from Ministry of Supply. I bought a couple Apollos and a couple Archives to see for myself. The Apollo is very clearly made of the same material all the new athletic clothing is, but not obvious to the eye at all. It's also got a good amount of stretch so I'm not stifled at all in terms of movement...bring my arms back / above my head, etc.

On top of that, the fit was great (I'm 5'7", 180 lbs and ordered the medium slim). It fits almost as well as the normal dress shirt I got and had tailored.

I haven't worn for any length of time yet so I can't vouch for how it feels and looks past 2 minutes, but for now this it's very, very promising. If it holds up, I doubt I would ever wear a regular dress shirt again unless I needed a certain color or clear shirt or something.

I plan on wearing an undershirt with it, at least the first time I eventually use it unless I find it unnecessary...I'll update then

But I don't think an undershirt defeats the purpose at all, In fact wearing an undershirt might make having a more breathable outer layer even more important for keeping cool.

Also, aside from the heat factor, since the shirt is not so stiff and has some stretch, it's just a more comfortable shirt to move around in because it's totally nonrestrictive. As opposed to a regular dress shirt, that makes it difficult to bring your arms up and out the sides, among other things

how translucent is the material? i wouldn't wear an undershirt with this (i don't with golf shirts), but I don't want a shirt so thin that your nipples are showing and you might as well just go shirtless.

(also, if you have trouble moving your arms in a dress shirt it means they don't fit well (probably that the shoulders are too wide and the seam is hanging over your arm). a well-fit or tailored dress shirt will allow you to move your arms a lot.

it may seem backwards at first, but a close-fit dress shirt will give you better movement than a baggy or loose-fitting shirt as long as the seams are where they are supposed to be. )

It's no more see through than the average white dress shirt I see in departments stores. Can you maybe see your nipples through it? Yeah, but I have 4 other white dress shirts with the same problem. In terms of thickness, it's actually not so thin, it's just different material

I mean, I could be buying shirts wrong, but I'm not just going in and grabbing something off the rack...I have them measure me and then I go and get them tailored...I have yet to get a dress shirt that allows for full range of movement...maybe the tailors in NYC are no good? I actively searched out the best one in my neighborhood to do the shirt I wore for my wedding

Anyone have any new brands? Starting to walk/bike to work more often. I work for a software company and usually wear jeans, nice shoes, and a polo or button down for work. Jeans aren't great for biking and I'd like to look into active khaki alternatives. I may go check out REI or something. I have trouble fitting shirts and pants so ideally I'd like to be able to try something in a store. I've got broad shoulders and big thighs but a smaller waste (30-32). Athletic clothes are easier to find in slim fit but "athletic dress" khakis and shirts often are pretty large.

Under Armour just opened a new store here in NYC with a ton of non-sportswear in it. Khakis, etc. I walked through quickly to feel stuff...nothing felt super light or revolutionary, but I'd imagine they're stuff is built with comfort and athletic builds in mind

Levi's has a commuter line also, not sure how good any of it is, but you'd be able to find it in stores at least. They have more than just jeans in the line

the Levi's line just doesn't fit/feel right to me. The pants have extra padding in the seat area, but the seams are exposed so they look a little weird. and the material is coated in scotch guard.

I've had a pair of those for almost 5 years now I think and they are awesome. Whenever I travel they usually end up being the only pair of pants I wear the whole trip unless it's a ski trip

Today is jean day at my company. Since it's still warm out it's actually less comfortable to wear jeans than the Nike golf pants I usually wear, but on principal I must take advantage of every relaxed dress code day no matter how hot it is

I wonder if I wore the Prana pants for jean day if anyone would say anything...I might even look slightly more dressed up than people wearing jeans

Yeah the second pair I got is the lighter khaki. With a nice button down it would be nice looking and cooler than jeans.

I tried them on for my wife without her knowing what they were and she said she had no idea they weren't regular dress pants, and wouldn't have noticed anything different about them...they are quite comfortable, way more so than dress slacks

Those look cool. Have you done anything active in them? My only concern would be breath-ability. My only problem is I have to try something on before I buy it. It's always a pain ordering something then returning it.

They arrived two days ago and literally all I've done is try them on twice.

It's 75 degrees here so I probably won't actually wear them for a bit, though if there's a chilly day sooner I'll throw them on...I am excited about the prospect of the light weight ones

I really can't tell any difference between these and the average sweat pant, so I wouldn't think breathability will be any different, but I'll report back when I wear them...will try and ride a bike for a bit when I do so I can give some insight on that too

Yeah usually when I think of sweat pants I think of 100% cotton pants that I would only ever wear as pajamas and not something I would wear being active. These are only 23% cotton so I imagine they're much more breathable than your standard 100% cotton sweat pants. I never understood how anyone could actually exercise in actual sweat pants. Seem way too hot to me.

My ski pants I use in negative temperatures don't even have insulation. I wear a thin silk base layer but that's it. I can't imagine doing any type of active activity in 100% cotton. It would just absorb all the sweat...

I am envious of you people. I ride into the city, shower at a gym, then change and ride the rest of the way. I wear tech golf pants and golf shirts every day and generally the worst dressed person in the office
