I hate buying suncreen with all the damn fillers and costing me too much money. Can I just get 100% SPF instead of all the shit they add to it? 6/20/2014 12:23:24 PM

i don't want melanoma. and i'm thinking if i can get a bottle of SPF, i can mix it with my own cheap lotion. 6/20/2014 1:30:27 PM

they don't sell plain pure SPF, you have to buy whatever lotion you prefer then put it in a pot on the stove on medium heat and let it simmer and it will reduce down to pure SPF 6/20/2014 1:31:52 PM

I go to the beach pretty regularly with a long sleeved shirt, put on sunscreen then put a shirt on, take off shirt for a little while (getting in the water, playing some game, etc) then when i am just sitting there I put it back on
If you were really concerned about skin cancer you would also throw in a nice straw hat and some sunglasses 6/20/2014 1:36:16 PM

i thought the FDA quashed the idea of manufacturers listing anything higher than 50 (other than calling it "50+"): http://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm258416.htm
i haven't kept up with it, though
i was under the impression that anything past 50 was silly, anyway...the UVB blocking breakdown is something like
15 SPF: 94% 30 SPF: 97% 45 SPF: 98%
you're better off wearing a shirt or reapplying more frequently 6/20/2014 2:57:16 PM

^Anything past 15 is pointless.
I believe if you go with something as high as SPF 100+ you may want to look at physical sunblocks versus chemical I suggest something along these lines (With a wide brim hat of course):

at least, i figure that extra 3% isn't a bad idea, especially on my face if i'm going to be getting significant sun
but yeah, 15 is more than sufficient in most cases, and i'll use it in lieu of 30 without a second thought 6/20/2014 3:55:52 PM

i assume you're joking, now...or your googling hand is broken
also, while we're on the topic...i have sensitive skin (especially on my face) and i've come to really like ocean potion since it's oxybenzone- and paraben-free: http://www.drugstore.com/ocean-potion-suncare-protect-and-nourish-sunscreen-spf-30/qxp187813
it's also only ~$7 at walmart

Its always been my understanding that the SPF rating is a multiplication of how long the sunscreen is protective on your skin. The usual explanation I've seen is "If you burn in 10 minutes, then an SPF 8 will protect you for 80 minutes (8*10), SPF 15 for 150, etc."
The reason I say anything over SPF 15 is useless is because almost every sunscreen out there washes/sweats off after a couple of hours. So an SPF 50 may be able to protect for 8 hours, but it won't matter because unless you don't sweat or go in the water during that time, it won't stay on your skin that long. 6/20/2014 4:06:34 PM

yeah, i think that's how it works...but from what i remember, there are a bunch of different factors that go into "real" protection
first, you're supposed to apply 30 minutes (or whatever) before you plan on being in the sun, since the chemicals need to be absorbed
second, you're supposed to apply a metric shit-ton of it, since most people don't apply enough ![](images/beatup.gif)
third, there's still technically more of the UVA/UVB-blocking chemical in the higher SPF sunscreens...so while it's true that SPF relates to time, that's due in part to the amount of chemical...more chemical, the longer it lasts (and so after a shorter amount of time, you've absorbed less radiation)...so a higher SPF should in theory still block more for the same amount of time 6/20/2014 4:12:51 PM

Just alabaster yourself with some zinc oxide cream like ug on salute your shorts. Just put it all over instead of just on your nose. 6/20/2014 4:26:06 PM

You joke, but that's what I've got to do pretty much every day this summer. I've got bad allergies to most chemical based sunscreens and have to avoid anything thats not purely zinc or titanium oxide.
Or get a big ass hat, then you don't have to worry about putting that casper shit on your face. 6/20/2014 4:30:35 PM

I've never seen a discussion about sunburn or sunscreen that wasn't serious.
Well....at least that's the case for people like me....gingers with skin allergies. I get sunburn from indoor daylight balanced lighting. 6/20/2014 7:07:19 PM

I, too, go to the beach (and the pool) in a long sleeved shirt. But I don't take it off. I wear a rash guard, swim shorts, huge sunglasses, and extra giant hat. I save a lot of money on sunscreen.
SPF is a rating, not a tangible thing. I had 100 SPF sunscreen one year (I had some sun sensitivities and skin sensitivities that had developed and 100 was all i found in that brand and i didnt want to go to another store) and it was not 100% blocking. It does correlate to the amount of time you are protected and higher SPF may protect more against long term effects, damage, and cancer (key word is MAY) but it doesnt protect against burns much better. Like someone stated above the protection percentage goes up in stupidly small amount after 45. I go for SPF 70 because I like to think the long term damage thing is real and so does my dermatologist, but I have an auto immune disorder and a skin disease and i have already had some moles removed.
The closest you will get to 100% sun protection is UPF 100 clothing.
