The idea came from the current Russia/Ukraine stuff, so one of these scenarios:

1) Russia/China/North Korea vs US/Canada/EU/Japan with a European theater and an Asian theater moving towards the US. You can also assume nukes will be used.

2) Shit is hitting the fan and it's clear we're on the bring of ^ scenario but nothing has happened yet.

3) Nukes have demolished a good portion of Europe and have hit major US cities and a ground force is coming.

or make up your own scenario, you know, whatever.

First of all no one would ever use a nuke in any realistic war. You are crazy if you think we would nuke russia over ukraine or even poland but ill play because there are all lot of myths that needs clearing. Wars will be fought by nuclear mations without nukes as long as no ones homeland is invaded. This is exactly why the weat doesnt want iran to get a nuke. Look at north korea.

1. Not every nuke is tsar bomba. Most of them wont incinerate entire cities.
2. Us population is low density. It is impossible for russia and china together to nuke enough area to take everyone out. The math has been sone and its not even close by many orders of magnitude.
3. Defense. Large nukes travel on large slow missiles or planes. Both technology from the 50s that we could easily sh [ot down.
4. Shleters. Every city in the world has underground fallout shleters.
5. Dangerous radioactive fallout only lingers around for weeks. Not years like most people believe.

Nukes are not what your parents thought they were.

How does the draft work these days? Is it just ALL men within draft age? Or do they do like 17-22 year olds first or something since they are probably in better physical condition than a 35 year old and probably don't have as many skills?

Not all of this is entirely full of shit.

If you build a list of priority targets for a foreign nuclear force to hit, it's not entirely unlikely that a majority of the US would survive. People assume that the first targets would be major population centers but that's not true. The first targets would be our own nuclear arsenal.

There are approximately 450 Minutemen III missiles stationed over a very large area in Wyoming, North Dakota, and Montana. You can literally go to Wikipedia and get a map of the silo fields (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/341st_Missile_Wing#mediaviewer/File:341st_Missile_Wing_-_MAF.png). Each silo is positioned so that, in theory, one warhead can't take out multiple silos, if they can even be disabled from a nuclear blast.

And that's just the land based missiles. Other targets would be our nuclear arsenals that aren't already on subs in Kings Bay, GA and Kitsap-Bangor, Washington for the Navy. Additionally, the Air Force keeps a healthy supply of warheads on hand for deployment on cruise missiles and bombers. I can't remember what the breakdown for distribution is off the top of my head but it's safe to assume they're not all in one place.

We also have a couple hundred B61s forward deployed at bases in Germany, Belgium, the UK, Italy, and I think 2 others.

Additionally, there would be a need to disable our production capabilities so we can't make more nukes, so that means destroying facilities in Los Alamos, Livermore, Sandia, Oak Ridge, Amarillo, Paducah, Kansan City, and Aiken. None of these facilities are small.

Finally, since we have close military allies that also have nuclear capabilities, we can assume they would also be a target in an initial strike.

Russia has 1800 strategically operational warheads (supposedly), and China has ~200-300 (supposedly). Even in the extremely unlikely scenario where they attack together, they would never fire all of them at once, because you don't deplete your entire nuclear stockpile at one time. Since some sites will be targeted by multiple warheads to guarantee redundancy in the face of countermeasures, it's seems likely that there won't be many warheads left to lob into major population centers.

As for fallout, *shrug*. We as a species have detonated a shitload (300+) of nuclear weapons in our atmosphere and for the most part we're fine (exception being folks directly downrange from fallout plumes). That's not an excuse to keep doing it carte blance, but to say the fallout is going to kill us all is a bit of a misrepresentation.

I wasn't saying what Earl posted was necessarily untrue, it's just he's trying to derail a thread and turn it into the soap box.
