A South Carolina pork lobbyist was arrested Wednesday morning trying to enter the Capitol with a gun.
Police discovered a 9-mm. Ruger handgun in a bag belonging to Ronald William Prestage during a security screening as Prestage tried enter the Cannon House Office building.
The 59-year-old was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a license, Capitol Police said.
Police confirmed Prestage is not a congressional staffer.
He is a resident of Camden, S.C., where he works as a veterinarian, a hog farmer and the president of Prestage Farms, The State newspaper reported.
He is also President elect of the National Pork Producers Council.
A rep from the group said Prestage was not on Capitol Hill for official NPPC business, adding that the organization had no comment on his arrest.
"Ironically, this guy who was packing meat and packing heat advocates locking pigs in cages — where he may soon find himself," a rep from the Humane Society said about the incident.
The gun scare comes just days after a congressional staffer tried to bring a weapon into the same building.
Ryan Shucard, press secretary for Rep. Tom Marino (R-Pa.) was arrested last Friday after police found him trying to enter the Capitol with a handgun and magazine.
He has pleaded not guilty to carrying a pistol outside a home or business, which is a felony.

"WASHINGTON — A member of North Carolina State University's Board of Trustees was arrested Wednesday and charged with carrying a gun on U.S. Capitol grounds, according to several media reports.

Ronald William Prestage, 59, of Camden, S.C., was arrested at about 9:20 a.m. at an entrance to the Cannon House Office Building, when a Capitol Police officer found a loaded 9 mm Ruger handgun in his bag, according to The Washington Post and the Roll Call and Politico blogs.

An N.C. State alumnus, Prestage was appointed to the university's board in May 2013.
