I usually go with their first name after meeting them, but my gf says you're supposed to call them Mr/Mrs. What do you do?

So maybe I'm a piece of shit, but I've never believed in the whole "I've been on this earth longer than you, so I deserve more respect" thing...If you've earned respect, that's a different story.

Anyway, I call them by their first names.

Depends on how well I know them..pretty much every body I work with is significantly older than me. But I just call them by their first name. Other than, it's usually Mr./Mrs. [first name].

And always use sir/ma'am. My parents drilled that one into my head at young age.

I feel like the generation that expected "sir/mam" is turning the corner on 80/90 now. Baby boomers don't seem to care for that crap.

I'm assuming you guys are only using Mrs. if you know the woman is married. If I'm unsure, it's "Ms."

I use whatever formal title they deserve: I mean, you guys aren't calling older doctors "Mr" or "Mrs" are you?

Same here.

What?! Are you guys still in elementary school or something?

If I'm meeting somebody's parents or something I'll usually go with Mr/Ms/Mrs the first time until they say "oh just call me x" and then go with that.

Professionally, I always go with their first name.

If they're like super elderly, I'll go with Mr/Miss and their first name.

^ Wow, so every person you come across in life is introduced to you by someone else?

[Edited on August 4, 2014 at 1:43 PM. Reason : also nearly every introduction i've been party to is first name/last name...not Bob or Mr. Walker]

^^ Who in the hell would say "Hi, I'm Mr. Walker?" It's almost always "Hi, I'm Robert Walker"...especially with old people.

Either their first name or Mrs/Mr last name. Depends on how well I know them, but that goes for most people.

Mr./Mrs./Ms. [last name]

But you say it a lot and fast and real familiar-like...so it doesn't feel formal after a while.

It's important to keep this up so when you do drunkenly bust out with "Jim" or "Nancy," you make a real impact.

most older doctors (and newer) will correct you if you say, Hello Mr. Walker, they will quickly say...Doctor, Dr. Walker

I think thats more specific for doctors though, they seem to have a God complex
