There used to be some place near Atlantic & Spring Forest (or Millbrook, I can't remember) that was pretty good. They had stuff like chicken & waffles, but it may have been a bit more Cajun-style, idk. I think it became a club later in the evening. 8/5/2014 9:28:46 AM

I'm not sure if I've ever been to a true "Soul Food" restraunt.... i did use to enjoy that cajun place that was named after the fat black guy, but I don't think that would qualify as soul food. I've only had chitlins in a restraunt once, and that was at a buffet at a restraunt down in Perquimans or Hertford County. They also had crawfish and pig's feet, so maybe that was kinda souly.

I tend to think Soul Food is Southern Food...just maybe slightly more unhealthy and more economical. There's a southern food estaurant in the neighborhood that serves delicious fried chicken and oysters/seafood. But it's high end...$13 for a fried chicken sandwich type shit. They uses local chickens, an artisan bakery for their rolls, and put all types of fancy shit in their slaw. It's Southern and delicious...but I wouldn't call it Soul Food.
Then there's a mom and pop Soul Food place around the corner that also sells fried chicken....and it, too, is delicious. But everything has a little more grease and butter. And they also serve fried pork chop sandwiches in between two pieces of white bread. And they have chitlins and crawfish. And pretty much everything is fried. And the pork chop sandwich is $5...not $13. 8/5/2014 12:33:11 PM

So soul food is southern food, but not all southern food is soul food. 8/5/2014 1:01:43 PM

I think of Soul Food as Southern cuisine with deep African-American roots. Stuff like greens, okra, cornmeal, and like discarded animal scraps (chitlins, pigs feet, tounge, etc). Stuff that was really cheap and non-desirable, because that's what you fed your slaves.
Today a lot of people look at Soul and Southern food as one in the same, but I'm pretty sure there are ~some~ unique differences. 8/5/2014 1:28:38 PM

Yeah...I like the African roots thing as well. I think there is some good Caribbean Soul Food that definitely isn't Southern. 8/5/2014 2:05:28 PM

I feel like the main element in determining what is and isn't soul food comes down to the metric of bougieness level.
So essentially what jbrick said.

Mr. Wonderful's is good! I ended up randomly getting take-out from there while at a friend's house off of New Bern. I had the wings and a waffle. The wings were good by themselves. I just added a little Texas Pete. The waffle was good too. A little soggy, but I guess that can be expected.
