When the Emmy's never gave two fucks about Fringe, which was an epic sci-fi series from JJ Abrams of all people, I stopped giving a shit about them.

I'd be embarrassed if I made a VMAs thread. Unless, of course, it was a hate thread (and deservedly so).

I actually only caught a few minutes of each one.
My gf had to tell me who nicki minaj was.
And neither of us knew who the other superstars that were performing with her were

^^True... but i always thought the vast majority of pop music on the VMAs was total crap. Even when I was enjoying Beavis & Butthead. It just seems to get crappier the older i get.

You found the fountain of youth? And like the crap that passes as popular pop music these days?

You say that as if it's a scientific fact.

In my opinion, that type of music is crap, and it's not really "rap" in my book. And she seems to really rely on her butt.

I say that as someone who listens to a lot of music and reads a lot about music

her verse on "Monster" is one of the best verses of the past 5 or so years and is regarded as so

the first couple performances were aight, but i shut it off after fucking miley cyrus wins video of the year and forces that stupid runaway children bullshit in our faces.

iggy azalea should have won best female video, not katy perry.

but obviously we all know this shit is fixed.

^^^it really is. I didn't even know that what she does is considered "rap".

^^my pool plays G105 24/7. Pretty sure I've listened plenty.

If someone says they really hate most of the rap/pop that is out these days its easy to dismiss as someone "getting old". But in this case I disagree. The majority of my 20something friends (24-30) have agreed with me a lot recently, in that the pop music scene is complete shit right now. So unless they all "got old" at the exact same time as me (unlikely) I'm gonna go ahead and say pop music is shit right now.

Is thegoodlife3 trolling? Serious question.

I mean, it is a great verse on an incredible album. He's just being his usual hipster self. He reads Pitchfork.com and you better respect that ish!

All of ^^ reads like GET OFFA MAH LAWN!!! No music is ever as good as the music you listened to in high school. We get it.

I watched her whole performance actually. I realize she's very popular with teenagers and early 20 somethings, and the whole twilight, american idol, so you think you can dance crowd, but I just don't find it very entertaining. Of course, I'm sure they wouldn't like most of the music I'm in to (which admittedly hasn't evolved all that much in the last ten years, back when i used to get more into music and seek out new stuff that i liked).

Are you into this new band 5 Seconds of Summer? They seem to be popular these days, so they must be good? At first I thought that One Direction learned to play instruments.

IMO, most mainstream pop music has always been crap. Some is more catchy than others, and some has more clever lyrics than others. And some have better voices than others.

[Edited on August 26, 2014 at 12:23 PM. Reason : and i realize debating this is silly. get off my lawn, you pop-loving hipster]

And yet, I did not say that. There's plenty of new music I enjoy thoroughly.

I'm convinced nobody would even know who that band is if they weren't constantly pimped out by ClearChannel. I mean they were on the morning show, of a station I listen to regularly, twice. And even that station didn't play their music (at least not then). Quite a head scratcher.

I miss a simpler time, before smart phones and the internet were so prevalent, when pictures had to be developed, when CDs were bought and mixed cassette tapes were made, when GnR, NIN, Beck, Beastie Boys, Bone Thugs, Pearl Jam and Run DMC performed on the VMAs....

I don't know about you guys, but I'm a big fan of just reading lyrics without any context of what else is going on in the song/the manner in which the verse is delivered

oh, and I also am a fan of only looking at snippets of said verse

I can't confirm that, but according to him he did author the music playlist for an episode of HBO's Girls, and is also responsible for the success of the band Future Islands.

I don't miss that at all. There was a ton of great music that nobody ever heard because they had no channel to reach an audience outside of their small scene. CDs were expensive and when you bought one it was a crap shoot as to whether it would be any good. Mixed tapes took forever to make and the sound quality was laughable; especially if you then dubbed the mix tape to make more than one copy.

All of the music by all of those bands you listed is more easily discovered and obtained in 2014 than it was in 1994.

although on point, still not entirely true.
