They really aren't a bad breed. They are just usually in a highly energetic state if they aren't trained, and bc of their power they can do damage in that state. If lap dogs had their bite force they'd all be banned. I work in the vet industry, and I don't see them being any more aggressive than any other dog, they can just back it up. That being said, I wouldn't have one. I have three small kids, and we do have a big dog breed with a reputation , but I'm just not a fan of pitt bulls bc of how much work they are.

I don't think they do need to be defended. I think you get a lot of unexperienced owners adopting them, and they never take the time to train them, and they are strong dogs. There aren't really any inherently vicious domesticated dogs anymore. It's been bred out of them.

Why do they need defending? Because every once in a while a kid gets mauled by one and a bunch of communities have a knee-jerk reaction and try to ban them. If there was an occasional effort on the part of shrill housewives to ban my dog, I'd be defensive about her, too.

Never mind that a small dog is way more likely to bite your kid than a pit. I worked in a pet store and it made me want to scream every time a new family walked in wanting a goddamn pomeranian because they thought it would be good for their toddler.

Pit Bulls are awesome dogs. Unfortunately they are also the favorite breed of really shitty dog owners. Couple that with the fact that they can cause a lot of damage when they actually do bad stuff, and that's how they get their bad rep. There are a lot more aggressive breeds out there than Pits.

I was watching a show on animal planet (Dog Whisperer or something like that), and the main guy did say that Pit Bulls can overcome previous bad treatment by an owner more than any other breed.

I feel bad about it, but I wouldn't get a Pit just because of their perception. I take my dog everywhere and people still flinch a little just because he's a big dog. People's reactions to Pit's are much worse.

Most of the reason pit bulls have a bad reputation is because people are stupid and think every aggressive dog is a pit bull. Most people couldn't pick a pit bull out of a line up.

I have worked with the higher echelons of the Military Working Dogs and contracted working dogs community for the past 2 years, and one of the most common questions asked is "why don't you use pit bulls as MWDs?" The answer: because they cannot be fully trained to provide predictable behavior in or out of the operating environment. That means no matter how you well you train them, there is a significant chance they will do something because they want to, good or bad, playful or harmful. That's the bottom line, argue all you want for or against pit bulls, at some point they will behave unpredictably by either chewing up a pillow playing or chewing your face off. I never go near them unless I am armed, I have heard too many stories of vets and vet techs being chewed on by a pit who has never displayed any aggression ever.

Think of it this way, dachshunds have the same problem, but they are small and their bite is limited (I have seen more dachshunds put down than any other due to biting) Pit bulls have massive amounts of power in their jaw alone, its just higher risk, I recommend too much risk for reward.

That's wrong and you just pulled it out of your ass. First of all there is no such thing as "pit bull", the breed is really a collection and mashup of multiple breeds with similar traits. Some of these are used in the military and police (and have been since before WWI), although because they score so highly on temperament tests they are more often used as therapy, search and rescue, or bomb/drug dogs.

Stratfordshire terrier, and not a single mwd is one. There are a lot of contract dogs so I guess there could be one contracted for military use, but I dost see a single one last time I was there.

Pits are very complicated characters and as a former pit owner, I can say that it is a very sensitive issue because pits usually form extremely close and unbreakable relationships with their owners. People tend to like this out of dogs.

The problem with them is that they require an incredible, nearly unbelievable amount of activity, training, and routine daily exercise to manage their impulses. It basically takes a very dedicated dog person to maintain them, but once you get them to that state, you can train them to perform almost any task. However, a fair majority of pit owners treat them like your everyday house dog and just manage to take them out to the park weekly, and that is not enough activity for them and they get stressed out and they do due dumb shit.

But, like guns, everybody has the bravado to think that they are responsible enough to have one, even when the majority of people lack this responsibility.

except for being rambunctious as puppies, each pit I've owned has been very calm and required less activity than the smaller dogs I've owned (although one of those smaller dogs was a Jack Russel who would have been on adderall if he was a human). That's actually one of my favorite things about the "breed", how laid back they are.

"Is this study legit?"

No, in the first sentence they say that the data is from press accounts so a strong bias has been introduced from the beginning. Then when you think about the fact that the press usually only reports what has been reported to police, there is another level of selective bias.

The news media only reports on some dog attacks/bites, not every single one. They are mostly going to report on whatever the scary breed of the moment is and are less inclined to report on others. They probably usually only report on attacks/bites that were reported to the police or animal control. People usually only report dog attacks from "scary" big dogs, a lot of dog attacks from smaller dogs never go any further than an apology.

So the study is only looking at data that has already been screened a few times.

Also, to get the percentage of dogs they are looking at classified ads to determine a percentage. Now granted its difficult to get the number and type of dogs since there isn't a dog census, but I think anyone can agree that this is a pretty shitty way to approximate it.

they are a kid friendly breed, you should be much more nervous with your kids around terriers and other small breeds and even a few larger breeds like dalmatians.

Where I'm from (Eastern NC) we have a lot of shit head dog owners that thought it was bad ass to have a pitbull on a chain. They are not well taken care of, get little to no disciplinary training, and since many of them are just on a chain and not fenced, of course they occasionally get loose or attack somebody.

On the other hand a friend of ours had the 2013 Hero Dog of the Year, Elle the Pitbull. But she spends a TON of time with her and the dog is extremely well trained. She wanted to do it to prove that pits can be extremely well trained. I don't think most folks disagree with that. For that matter most dogs can be trained. The problem is shitty owners who get a dog they can't spend the time and energy necessary to get them trained and then the dog is wild and powerful, so shit happens and the dog breed is the "problem". Shit heads who think they are a badass because they walk a roided up pitbull around the neighborhood on a fucking chain are the issue.

I know of a pit who tried to eat a child's face off...did some damage but thankfully the kid still has his [scarred] face. Scary fucking dogs.

Kadwackle recently had a pit who was always trying to eat her face off too.

Little Kennedy was covered in blood.

"I just don't understand. It's a crowded area, my daughter didn't do anything to provoke the attack, and how can you let a dog that's supposedly on a leash latch onto my daughters face?" Cortney said."

Not surprised that retard wouldn't know how to handle a dog. I imagine any breed would have tried to bite her.

And why is it so hard to believe that a chihuahua could fuck up a little kid/infant's face?? A fucking squirrel could probably ruin a small child's face as well. Probably difficult to to do the same to a grown man's face...but not a kid.

What's the argument again?? There are more dog bites related to Pit Bulls? Actual or reported?

Definitely. But the reason is because there are infinitely more shitty pit bull owners than other, more aggressive dog breeds.

Chihuahuas and Jack Russell Terriers are much more aggressive dogs....but they're kept in purses and old lady's laps inside houses. Pit Bulls are kept in poor homes, treated like shit, often taught to attack and act aggressively, and then they're let loose in areas where attacks can happen.

That doesn't make them a bad breed. It's make their owners shitty people. If those same owners mis-treated an Australian Shepherd, Golden Retriever, or Black Lab....the same shit would happen...those people just don't have those types of dogs (my worst dog bite came from a Golden Retriever....fucking shithead).

Hmmmmm I don't see chihuahuas listed in this report (outside of one that got killed by a pit along with the chihuahua's owner)

Quote :
"32 U.S. dog bite-related fatalities occurred in 2013. Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 700 U.S. cities, pit bulls contributed to 78% (25) of these deaths. Pit bulls make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog population.2

Together, pit bulls (25) and rottweilers (1), the second most lethal dog breed, accounted for 81% of the total recorded deaths in 2013. This same combination accounted for 74% of all fatal attacks during the 9-year period of 2005 to 2013.

The breakdown between these two breeds is substantial over this 9-year period. From 2005 to 2013, pit bulls killed 176 Americans, about one citizen every 18.6 days, versus rottweilers, which killed 33, about one citizen every 99.5 days.

In the year of 2013, the combination of pit bulls (25), rottweilers (1) and bullmastiffs (2) accounted for 88% of all dog bite-related fatalities. Notably, the two bullmastiff-mixes3 were littermates that inflicted death within a 6-month period."
