So, are you somebody who regularly goes online and reviews restaurants and products? Do you give good, bad, and mediocre reviews? Or do you only feel the urge to do this when you're angry/dissatisfied with a restaurant or a product?

This thread was inspired by the most recent tipping thread. Somebody made the comment that the restaurant had bad reviews online... it seems to me that a majority of people are probably more inclined to go through the time and effort to write a review only if they're unhappy. On several occasions, I've thought about going online and writing a bad review, but I end up procrastinating and not following through after I calm down.

I absolutely hate online reviews. There are only two kinds of people who write reviews:

1) People who work for the company and pretend to write reviews. (99% of positive reviews)
2) People who complain about shit, and are typically the kind of person who will bitch about every little thing once they feel they've been mistreated (aka you didn't bring them a vat of mayonnaise in 2 seconds). (99% of negative reviews)
3) People who are funny and write interesting reviews. (roughly 0%)

There are three different times I will write a review, I don't do it often but usually will in the following situations:

1) Something I really liked that I feel others should know about
2) Something that was really bad
3) Something that I think people will want a review on

1 is something that I thought was great but doesn't have many reviews.

2 is obvious.

3 is a situation like what I had recently where I had a garage door company come out to fix a busted spring. It was over a holiday weekend so my choices were limited and they didn't have a ton of reviews and the ones they had seemed either fake or of little value. I thought they did a good job but at the same time I was a bit hesitant because I got a weird vibe that some of the stuff they were doing was just to rip me off. I gave them a good review (not great) because I had no evidence that they did that but I just gave an honest account of my experience with them.

Generally if somewhere has a bunch of reviews I don't bother unless I really disagree with them.

I don't write any reviews unless it's an exceptionally positive experience. I'll take time out of my day to reward hard work and help out a local business if they leave a lasting impression. OTOH people who write nasty online reviews of restaurants are passive aggressive pussies. Unless they've actually said whatever nasty shit they wrote online to the owner/manager's face, they are entitled cowards and they deserve to have people fuck with their source of income in return.
