6/2(1+2)=1

I'm not sure how I would have done so well if I was confused about basic order of operations. According to the comments on reddit the answer is 9. I am confused now, like when I found out its OK to put one space after a period instead of two. Is there really a difference between ÷ and /?

6/2(1+2)

first you do the addition in the parentheses

6/2(3)

then you divide

3(3)

then you multiply

9

^that's misleading though because you don't multiply before you divide. You do them at the same time, left to right

This isn't really about order of operations. It's about how calculators work.

if you multiply before you divide, instead of doing it left to right, you'd have:

6/2(1+2)=

6/2(3)=

6/6=

1=wrong

my way you don't have to convert division to multiplying fractions though

you just add the numbers in the parentheses, then do the rest of the problem left to right

6 divided by 2 times 3

no it doesnt

6 divided by 2 = 3

3 times 3 = 9

why do you need to add a 0.5 into the equation for no reason?

A.

6
______ = 1
2(1+2)

B.

6
__ (1+2) = 9
2

And 6 ÷ 2(1+2) = 9, but it looks like the Casio interprets the division symbol as a fraction like A., so it's also 1.

Either way, it's a nonissue. If you're trying to do something that matters, you'd make sure you used enough notation so that it wasn't ambiguous.

^^He and moron are saying you could multiply by 1/2 (as if that's not the same thing as dividing by 2).

i just happen to think my way is easier since you don't have to convert to fractions/decimals for no reason

Other than (1+2) PEDMAS, left-to-right, etc. don't matter.

I'm also surprised by the number of people who are drawn to the 1/2 in there.

6/2 = 3 to me right away, not 6 * (1/2) and then 3.

I remember something about how you are supposed to multiply the number next to the parenthesis into the parenthesis first, because 2(x+2) would be 2x+4. If you were to do the 6/2 first you would get 3x+6

[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 9:19 PM. Reason : would you guys do it differently if it was 6/2(x+2)?]

it is solved left to right. you divide before you multiply

and before any of that, you solve the addition in the parentheses

yeah i get that when there are no variables you do parenthesis first. make that 1 an x and simplify, then plug in 1 for x and you get 1. I'm obviously confused. It's been too long.

you're overthinking it. We're not solving for x. We're just doing a basic math problem with a real number answer.

I'm not saying solve for x, just simplify the equation statement and then replace x with 1. Is the answer still 9 to you guys? Or do you agree that you distribute the 2 into the parenthesis?

ok

then make the problem 6/5(1+2)

so using your method

is 3 * 1/5 * 6 = 6/5*3

This is a pretty basic equation. Surprised to see so much arguing about it. Left to right, do the shit in the parentheses first. Not complicated.
