Or I should say type "wanna." But I'm genuinely curious. I've noticed many Asians using this word when writing English, even in formal contexts (for example, a student e-mailing me and trying to join my section might say "I wanna add your class.") It's come up enough in my life that it seems to be a trend.
Does anyone else have experience with this phenomenon/know where it originated? 10/4/2014 11:45:08 PM

Are these ESL Asians? They probably don't have a grasp on the fact that it's not proper grammar to use in formal communications.
If these are native English speakers, then they're just idiots, like the ones who say "could of" instead of could've. They didn't read enough as kids to realize that some things are written different than they sound. 10/5/2014 7:12:30 PM

^^ Yes, I've only heard it from ESL Asians. Pretty much all the users I can think of offhand were Chinese (or had Chinese-sounding names), in fact.
So it's possible that this construction is actually taught, as correct, in certain Chinese education systems. Or possibly it's just really hard for a Chinese native speaker to say "want to," so he/she writes it exactly as it's pronounced. I have no idea on this second theory though.

^probably because Chinese has a low degree of inflection: Verbs normally aren't modified to express such things as tense, mode, person, or number, and instead the lemma is used, so when you look up the word they use for "says" or "said" the main translation is "say" 10/6/2014 12:07:19 AM
