Apparently grouping Elementary school kids into girls and boys offends some people....

This country is circling the toilet bowl with stupidity if stuff like this continues to propragate.

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/389862/school-told-call-kids-purple-penguins-because-boys-and-girls-not-inclusive

Quote :
"A Nebraska school district has instructed its teachers to stop referring to students by “gendered expressions” such as “boys and girls,” and use “gender inclusive” ones such as “purple penguins” instead.

“Don’t use phrases such as ‘boys and girls,’ ‘you guys,’ ‘ladies and gentlemen,’ and similarly gendered expressions to get kids’ attention,” instructs a training document given to middle-school teachers at the Lincoln Public Schools."

Besides finding it hard to believe that elementary school kids can as prepubescents identify as transgendered, I think the transgendered community is hurting their cause by harping on issues like this; offending the cis-gendered community that makes up 99.8% of the population.

This has nothing to do with children. This has everything to do with whacko parents who think it is ok for Johnny to identify as Jane, maybe because the parents are really f'd up, or because they really wanted a girl and got a boy.

HUR represents 42% of people on my Facebook news feed.

I often consider defriending those in that 42%.

something tells me that if the year was 1964 instead of 2014, he'd be posting articles about teachers being instructed to allow black and white children to play together. he probably would have posted this:

along with the article

That is the most outrageous thing I have ever read.

I mean, who's ever even heard of a purple penguin?

I think part of the point is that prepubescent children really shouldn't be having gender identity issues. Again it goes back to their parents.

I think comparing this issue to another current social issue like gay marriage is more appropriate than comparing it to integration. Integration was a far more important topic then than gender identity crisis in 7 year olds.

Sexual orientation is not the same as gender identity. Gender identity issues are probably a bigger issue for pre pubescent children than adolescence.

Regardless, I'm not sure what people are so upset by this for. The guidelines were very relaxed, nothing was banned, not segregating kids by gender isn't a bad thing, and it's one single school district.

Why not let them try it out and see what happens? Isn't this what small government people want to happen? Experimentation?

You people must not realize how old you are. The gender wage gap exists because our generation was never taught to be conscious of those types of issues, what's wrong with taking very minor steps so that future generations don't develop the same negatives biases?

Just because something isn't done the way it was when you were growing up doesn't mean it's wrong. Some of you are becoming old curmudgeons afraid of anything too different or new.

They're not requiring all kids to wear dresses, they're not telling anyone they can't identify as a boy or girl, they're not switching to communal bathrooms, they're just asking teachers not to but such an emphasis on gender in contexts where this shouldn't have any bearing.

Maybe by de-emphasizing gender a little bit, the boy who wants to play with a doll (God forbid) only gets the shit kicked out of him 10 times instead of 20 before he hits high school.

yes, but surely abolishing the use of all gender-specific nouns is going way, way, way too far

I mean, okay, fine. if we're concerned about the boy with the doll getting the shit kicked out of him, then we could emphasize here and there throughout the early education system that it's all right to exhibit, or even embrace, traits associated with the other gender.

but don't try to abolish gender traits or distinctions. my God, don't we live in the age of diversity or some shit? we should celebrate the differences between male and female "culture," just as we celebrate different cultures in the more literal sense.
