Here's one that I learned from watching Good Hair: If you see straight hair on a Black woman, it's probably a weave; although they're expensive and need regular maintenance, they're less dangerous than perms (applying a paste containing sodium hydroxide to permanently straighten hair, which needs to be regularly re-done as the hair naturally grows out, much like dyeing except it can make the hair fall out or damage the scalp if misapplied).

^Not exactly true. If you see fine, straight hair, it's most likely a weave or a wig. Textured/thick straight may be relaxed or straightened.

While true of many blacks (african american vernacular aka "black" english still has many holdouts to spoken dialects of the past), such hints to past dialects, vernaculars, and brogues, are carried throughout nearly every modern style of language/English. This is most evident is in Okracoke, but also in the Appalachian Mountains, and several other "more isolated" areas. Though regional dialects and the subdialects, such as the southern accent (and it's subdialects), Boston, etc also still have some audible roots from the past.

The point here is, that no matter what, these throwbacks are often a sign of isolation and/or lack of education (either by force or choice). While linguistics is a fascinating study, and differing dialects is interesting, it's not always something to blindly praise and enjoy. While the nuances of the speech aren't really problematic, they are indicative of past or present problems that may need addressing (or may not). Languages are constantly changing and are becoming less unique and more generic; thus if a person speaks a dialect heavily, it may be such an indicator. Where as regional accent generally would not (accent vs dialect vs vernacular, etc also plays into this).

^ I was talking to a guy who used to work on the cars one day, and somehow the topic of why there aren't more black drivers came up. He said it was because black drivers couldn't pass the rigorous endurance test to be able to become a NASCAR driver.
