Cool, it's like Siri or OK Google, but a separate device! And they say Amazon is late to the party..

I'm always in the market for a bluetooth speaker...not so sure I need Siri on my kitchen counter though. Seems a little creepy.

I want it so everytime my step son asks me a question, which turns into 50 more questions, I can send him to Alexa and she can answer his questions all day long haha. Also, for the ones I dont actually know the answer to.

Damn Amazon Prime discount tempting me to buy useless gadgets just because I can save $100.

EDIT: Wait a minute

What happens if I say "Wikipedia: Abraham Lincoln"? Does it read the whole damn Wikipedia page to me?

Wow, it's got an app that you can use to manage your alarms and music. So now I don't have to use that pesky Alarm app on my phone. Thanks Amazon.

Can't wait until they come out with their own digital cameras and GPS units.

Yeah sounds like they are progressing backwards...regressing an trying to sell it, on purpose.

Now if they would just build an Echo app for the smartwatch then we'd be cooking with bacon grease. Come on now, being able to talk to your watch would be too bad ass.

i can't imagine the sound from this is any better than the stereo sound i get from my arctic jambox-knockoff BT speakers that cost me $14

http://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-Bluetooth-Speaker-Microphone-Hands-Free/dp/B00F4EONWS

granted, $14 was a heckuva deal, but the ~$30 they usually go for is well worth it...all i'm lacking is talking to my damn speaker, which i'm not inclined to do

Why in the fuck would anyone voluntarily bug their own house and transmit it directly to Amazon, and by extension, mostly likely government agencies, where there's no particular reason for anything it records to not be kept on file for all eternity?

the latest Android OS is always listening, and i'm sure iOS will get this at some point too.

If you've watched any movie about the future... this is the future.

Even if all the voice processing were done locally, just the outbound queries would be enough to know too much* about a person.

*too much in this case means what someone who grew up in the 90s views as "too much." Younger generations will not have our same hangups about this.

Cellphones are not always actively listening by default, except for a few models (that may change with the next generation, iOS 8 I think has that option, and so do some of the Android variation). They are not explicitly set up to collect data and transmit it to an outside source. So that's not really comparable. I am no privacy hardliner like Duke, in fact, I generally don't mind my browsing data being aggregated and used to improve searches etc, but always-on mic would make me feel uncomfortable. Same with those smart TVs that use gesture and voice recognition for control (as well as Kinect). They are literally always watching. This is like "1984", except government didn't even have to force these devices on us, they expect us to buy them on our own dime. I have Prime, but I won't be buying one of these.

many devices have been capable of violating your privacy through audio and video for a long time now. Have you seen the movie American Pie circa 1999

It's optional. I don't have mine turned on, not for security worries, but because I don't want it to inadvertently trigger while it's in my pocket and potentially use up battery.

Just got an email... it doesn't seem like this product will really have ANY functionality once it's released.

It's basically a glorified amazon music player.

I might just wait on the 2nd gen, or see what apple/google releases...

I've got one and my wife and I like it a lot. Voice control works really well. Its cool being able to say, "Alexa, play Etta James", and it will just start shuffling her songs off of prime.

Imo the sound is pretty damn solid for a $100 Bluetooth speaker.
