because no one reads the last post (and this one is somewhat helpful):

Quote :
"FYI, NC peeps can freeze your credit reporting for free through the NC DOJ:

http://ncdoj.gov/Protect-Yourself/2-4-3-Protect-Your-Identity/Protect-Yourself/Freeze-Your-Credit.aspx"

I'm also reading that signing up for Equifax's 1-year credit monitoring has a clause somewhere in the user agreement that limits your ability to participate in lawsuits (instead you go to corporate arbitration). Take that with a grain of salt though as its basically just an internet rumor at this point.

Equifax (credit reporting agency) got hacked in late July but only notified the public yesterday. They estimate 143 million US names, addresses, mother maiden name, birth days, SS numbers, credit card numbers etc were exposed.

So basically there is a solid chance your pretty important financial info is floating somewhere out there on the internets. So far you can check to see if you were impacted on their website and they will enroll you in a credit monitoring program for free for 1-year.

^^Im seeing the same

^True, but the difference with this one is all of the information that banks/credit card companies use to ID you was basically aggregated all in one place for potential identity thieves. For instance in that big Yahoo email hack a couple years ago an ID thief would have to go through and try to tease out identifying info from your inbox to apply for credit. A simple password change cut your chances of being affected greatly. With this hack they'd be able to pull your files and basically have a list of everything they need to sign up for all sorts of potential financial shit.

^the claim is you can submit a pin they give you and temporarily unfreeze the credit as needed. Personally, I'm skeptical that it is that easy (they never make it that easy).

I guess I'm on the fence, but was gonna look more into the NC DOJ link I posted earlier and possibly freeze my shit tonight. Dealing with an credit agency can't possibly be worse than dealing with law enforcement and identity theft. Right? .........right guyz?

My credit has been frozen for years, and I have never had a problem unfreezing it. You can unfreeze it for 24 hours either over the phone or online. Some of the credit bureaus charge like $5 to unfreeze it.
Honestly, I think it's worth it. I banked with Wells Fargo, and one day after leaving the bank to open a checking account, I got notification from the bank that I needed to unfreeze my credit to continue with the new credit card I applied for. That assholes tried to open an additional account in my name, but were thwarted.
