Ok then let's talk about it
The premise of the Prison Industrial Complex is flawed in that it asserts there is an aggregate collusion among interests in the criminal justice system to exploit cheap labor through a "prison camp."
Rather than get into the merits, we'll just look at percentage of labor driving economies:
Quote : | "The Decline of Prisoner Work. Yet, despite a long-standing consensus in favor of gainful employment for convicts, idleness remains the norm behind bars. Perhaps half of all prisoners do some kind of work, counting housework (maintenance chores) and vocational training programs in the prisons. However, most of these jobs are part-time and produce no income for room and board, restitution and other ends.
Things used to be different. In 1885 three-fourths of U.S. prison inmates were involved in productive labor, with the majority working under prison contract and leasing arrangements with private employers" |
http://www.ncpa.org/pub/ba245
Looks like the theory that the Crim Justice Sys is in a conspiracy for cheap labor to feed monied interests is out the window of the data alone.
Thanks for playing. 1/8/2015 12:10:38 PM

Addendum:
The real value of the inmates is that they are living and breathing humans.
The contracts to build the walls around them, feed them, and provide them with medical care is where the real money is. The influence of monied interests, if any, is not driven by putting them to work, imho, it is driven by scoring more contracts to house and contain people.
I actually would be in favor of a Prison Industrial Complex.
I think inmates should be given the right to work, and I believe in a modern day empire theory where we should actually be sending our convicts to our overseas battles much like a French Foreign Legion concept or a British empire idea
Would be better use than having them rot here for eternity and be useless.

Quote : | "Consider a prisoner who is earning $14,000 per year. His productivity adds to the economy just as does that of a noninstitutionalized person. If 800,000 prisoners worked - a labor force equal to those of Wyoming, Alaska and Vermont combined - their productivity would add more than $20 billion to the economy." |
$14,000 a year? Perfect.
Quote : | "Conclusion. Prison work has many opponents, as did proposals to put welfare recipients to work - and for many of the same reasons. But states that have aggressively moved to "workfare" have shown that the vast majority of welfare recipients can become productive, benefit the economy and build new lives. We should expect no less from the nation's prisoners." |
Riiiiiiiight.
The pontifications are great, but where is the data that shows that prison labor leads to tangible results. Do we not have a big enough sample size? lol oh right... all the data is owned by private institutions. To me its simple, private prisons incentivize having prisoners. What else is there to discuss?
