Anyone else do traditional wet shaving? It's so much better than using cartridge razors and canned shaving cream (I still use them for speed). I can't seem to find anywhere local that sells Proraso products and a slew of double-edged razor blades? I know online is cheaper but I'd like to test out some products (in particular the razor blades) before I buy a lot of them.

I just realized I've been using a $0.10 Shark blade for over a month and changed it on general principal. Keep waiting for those bastards to run out so I can try something else, but the one box has lasted years and still going strong.

haha Feathers are silly sharp. I'm undecided whether I like Feather or something a little tamer like Dorco. The Feathers shave great, but damn, they also make it so easy to cut yourself. It seems like I can rarely manage a full shave with them without a nick somewhere.

I got some of those coming in a sampler pack I ordered. I have about 15 different blades coming to me next week. I actually look forward to shaving since I moved on from those petty cartridges

And another thing I found this shaving product called Somersets (I got the pre-shave oil and the after shave balm) they sell at some Walgreens and it pretty damn good compared to what I've used so far.

So far Pol silver blades, Proraso shave soap and aftershave balm, with either and alum block or Shea Moisture aftershave (tea tree oil) gives me the best shave ever! I feel so sexy

I tried the Gillete Blue Silver blades in my Merkur 34c tonight and damn it gives a smooth shave, but not quite as close at the Polsilver blades. I would highly recommend testing them out.

Feathers are not for me. They cause me more irritation than Astra blades, although I do like Astras and they are probably the best bang for your buck. I even used a Razorock tallow based soap that is very slick and still have mad irritation. Polisilver and Gillete Silver Blues leave me pretty much without any irritation whatsoever. I bought 100 of each so I'm good for a while.

Yeah it's more of a hobby, however you get a much better shave this way. Razor rumps are drastically reduced (if you are prone to them), the brush exfoliates your face, the soaps are better for your skin than anything in a can, and overtime you can save a lot of money compared to cartridges. Also, if you have a beard and want to get rid of it, these types of razors will slice right through it without any nagging or pulling. But based on my experience the hobby aspect of it will cause you to just buy an collect items, thus countering the saving of money. I feel so much like a G every time I shave now and I look forward to shaving.

my setup is:

gillette ball end tech (circa 1965) - $4 from flea market
derby extra blades - less than $0.10 per blade
tweezerman badger-hair brush - $10 from amazon
stainless razor and brush stand - $10 from ebay
van der hagen shave soap - $1.50 from wally world

i keep the soap in a ramekin i found at goodwill that has a lid, looks nice and matches the decor of the bathroom...i use a regular mug for my hot water

Oh yeah if you use aftershave stuffs Thayer's Witch Hazel and Nivea Balm (sensetive) are the best sub-10 dolla products you can buy. Both are very effective.

i've been DE shaving for almost a decade...i've tried a variety of blades, brushes, and razors

i like what i use...good technique (which took me some time to develop) and a good razor/blade combo leaves me smooth, nick-free, and virtually without irritation

the cool thing about DE shaving is that there are a boatload of variations on equipment and range from cheap to expensive...use whatever makes you happy and works for you

Oh I know I am just fucking wit ya for using the el cheapos! I have not tested out the Derby's yet, but I do like Astra (in the green box) and they are about on par with each other.

^^^ You don't have to be a pro to feel the difference in soap that cost $10 vs one that cost $2 or with blades that cost $35 for a 100 versus blades that cost $8 per 100.

i think the argument (one i agree with) is that different things work for different people...i have stupid sensitive skin, and some of the "nicer" soaps caused me to break out, so i figured paying more for a crappier experience didn't make sense for me

there are definitely some "el cheapo" blades out there, and i realize derbys are on the lower end, but they work perfectly in my gillette...they do NOT work well in my merkur (i prefer feathers in that one)

more expensive doesn't guarantee a better shave when it comes to DE shaving...i definitely recommend folks try out a variety of combinations to figure out what works best for them

on a side note, when i travel i use the CVS brand of sensitive skin shaving cream...it gives me a nick- and irritation-free shave with my short-handle gillette (another mid-60s tech ball end), though not nearly as close as using soap and brush

^^ Yeah I get that, but whether one set-up works better for you or not a higher quality product undeniably will give a different feel to it. A tallow based artisan soap and blades that are iridium coated and have a superior quality assurance program in place will surely give most people a better feeling than not when compared to lower end products. However I ain't hating I'm still testing out stuff and this combo so far works the best for me at my skill level. I mainly use a Merkur 34c but I also occasionally use my Van der Hagan razor.
