http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2332169-california-high-school-girls-basketball-coach-suspended-after-massive-win?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial

Quote :
"A girls high school basketball game in San Bernadino, California, that finished with a 159-point margin of victory (161-2) for Arroyo Valley High School over Bloomington High School Jan. 5 led to a two-game suspension for its coach, Michael Anderson."

Pussification of American kids continues. This nobody loses bullshit needs to end.

I don't necessarily agree with a suspension.

but to say the punishment was a result of a 'everyone wins, no one loses' attitude is disingenuous. I think the coach is being punished in part because he ran a full court press like the whole first half.

Coach getting suspended is ridiculous.

The issue is that there's no mercy rule in play. IIRC in little league we always had the "10 run rule" to prevent situations like this. Sounds like the system needs to be revamped. The coach isn't going to say "oh hey we've bashed yalls face in too hard, you can go home now".

In any sport, you are expected to play the entire regulation no matter what.

For once I completely agree with BlackJesus in every regard on this small issue of not pussifying America and rewarding excellence and teaching people to get the fuck over it if you lose by 80 points or 159 points. It definitely promotes mediocrity and teaches you that you need outside intervention if the margin gets too high in anything you encounter in life.

I see this as teaching an adult they lacked good judgment in not guiding these kids to be merciful. Is mercy a weakness? some would say yes.

Remember when Urban Meyer refused to have his team take a knee in the final minute of the national championship, and instead scored a garbage time TD. He should be fired.

Both teams in the OP learned a valuable lesson that all Americans need to learn. When you have your opponent on the ropes, you don't call timeout, you smash their fucking head in until the clock strikes 0. If you don't like it, practice until you can return the favor.

The real travesty is 1 of 2 things, if not both:

1) A team of high school girls is on some serious PEDs, and no one gives a fuck.

2) A team of high school girls is actually a team of female toddlers, and no one gives a fuck.

Fuck this. We used to beat other wrestling teams, like, 77-3 or 80-0 back in highschool. Granted, wrestling is a little different from basketball, because while there is a team, it is largely an individual sport...but still...

That's mostly my mentality...

I'm all for top-notch sportsmanship, and there is a place for strategically putting in the 2nd and 3rd string athletes (to develop them and rest/protect the 1st stringers-not out of any obligation of mercy to the opponent). I have no problem with complete destruction of the other team.

I don't have any problem with a pro or college team beating another team 161-2

High school and below it starts to get a little murkier

I do NOT think it's ok for a little league team, for example, to blow another team out and not take their foot off the gas the whole time

^ then make any accompanying unsportsmanlike conduct (if any) the offense itself,
a blanket restriction placed only on score margins themselves is harmful to competition and encourages mediocrity
however, I suppose a "mercy rule" that is implied by "house rules" of game is fine, as long as the players have notice that something like a 50 pt margin automatically ceases the gameplay in the name of fair play and good conduct.

But if you are still engaged in the course of the game, you should play to win, and that's it. There should be no "sanctioned" taking it "easy" on the opponent just because the score margin is too high. I am saying that there is a time and a place for showing mercy, just not within a sanctioned sporting event.

How would anyone ever learn to be graceful winners if they never achieved the opportunity to understand what it is like to really win?
You can't force people to understand sportsmanship.

And especially in terms of high school development, Don't pre-empt that natural process by restricting things numerically without regard for the human element. Let the losers learn how to lose and let the winners learn how to win.

I'm firmly against the "everyone gets a trophy" culture. But I think it's kind of ridiculous that the coach didn't call off the dogs in this game. I'm not sure I would suspend him, but he would definitely get a "Come on, man!?".

when the game is no longer in reach, turn the game into a practice. make them play defense without stealing the ball. make them play offense with a pass minimum, make them run the plays they are bad at. etc etc. all this keeps that type of score from happening.

this coach was obviously playing a strategy based on exploiting the other teams weakness for the entire game and scoring as quickly as possible which is not good for his own team.

what type of thing do you think a player should be suspended for? I'd see making a conscious decision detrimental to player learning for self gratification is a suspendable offense.

It's high school sports, not tee ball.

Quote :
"Anderson told Landon Negri of the Orange County Register that he met with opposing coach Dale Chung before the game to discuss the situation. He was trying to balance getting his team prepared for league play with avoiding an embarrassing scenario.

"This was our last game before we started league, and we were going to come out playing hard," he said. "I wanted to let him know there was no harm intended, and that if he had any ideas or concerns just to let me know. We were going to play a half of basketball, at least... And he seemed fine with that."

He tried to slow the onslaught by benching his starters at halftime and telling his reserves to burn the shot clock before trying to score. A running clock isn't allowed until the fourth quarter under current high school rules."

Beyond playing his bench the entire second half there isn't much else the coach can or should do. You don't tell your team to go out and give less than maximum effort. What's he supposed to do, hold it for a shot clock violation every time and roll the ball out of bounds if they get a steal on defense? Patronizing them and not playing the game is worse than kicking their ass.

Quote :
""People shouldn't feel sorry for my team. They should feel sorry for his team, which isn't learning the game the right way," he said.

He also questioned Anderson's approach.

"I've known him for about seven years... He's a great X's and O's coach. Ethically? Not so much," he said. "He knows what he did was wrong.""

The other coach also needs to shut the fuck up. You don't teach your team to look outward and blame the other team when you lose. He should be fired for gross incompetence and for setting a terrible example for his team.

Huh what? Do you understand what happens when you practice being bad???? YOU DEVELOP BAD HABITS AND ACTUALLY BECOME BAD. Have you ever seen a NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL/Soccer team purposefully play bad?

I wish I had played for a coach that said go out there and run slow, don't block, let them make a tackle etc. I'd of went home after the game and never came back.

They are learning to be sympathetic losers. They will carry those lessons into their future careers etc. "My company is making a profit, lets not make too much, so lets drop the price so we only get a 5% profit. Don't want to win by too much."

When you play a competitive sport, you know going in that if you suck, you will get embarrassed. At least that's how I looked at it.

no one is saying play bad but restrictions are a great coaching tool to simulate tougher teams in practice.

running this team into the ground isn't going to get them ready for league play. Why not practice some situations? Running out the clock, running your offense all the way through just in case the first option isn't there. getting a steal and slowing it down for situations where running is not in your favor, sagging defense instead of pressure because you might need to keep a more athletic team in front of you.

if this team doesn't go undefeated this season, this coach let them down by not preparing them for the team they lost to. this game was over so there was no need to keep doing the same thing. work on something else. this is shitty coaching.

I don't know about that, imagine how it would feel if the other team just stopped playing defense. They just score and stand under the basket watching you score. What I don't understand is what people think this coach could have done to stop this from being embarrassing.

If one team is 150+ points better than the other, other than telling his team to throw the ball out of bounds and not play defense, what could you do to save the losing team from annihilation?

Its not about saving the other team. Its about not playing with a "lets see how many points we can score in one game" attitude. Ive already listed things this coach could have done to challenge his team. Even if he says he did some of them it just doesnt add up. Theres only so much time in a game and he was scoring like 4 points per minute.

that's a strong statement.

I feel like you could live down losing by 159 points, because at least then the burden of shame would be diluted amongst 5-10 people. but if you shit yourself on the court, that's just you, and you're never, ever living it down.

people trying to defend this are silly. no, he shouldn't have been suspended. no, he shouldn't have purposely allowed the other team to score. but 159-2? there isn't even a shot clock in the first 3 quarters. the team could have easily crushed the other team without running the score up to 159.... actually, i wonder how long that averages out for each possesion? the team had to be scoring in the first few seconds of each possesion. once it was obvious that they were going to demolish the other team, he could have taken that opportunity to practice different plays, different defenses, different situations, etc. etc. if you defend this guy, you're probably an asshole yourself.

You're a stupid asshole (your vagina is leaking etc), one coach does his job (prepares his players, trains the properly, teaches them HOW TO WIN) , the other does NOTHING and we are punishing the coach that did a good job? The losing team scored 2 points in the ENTIRE GAME. Half of the game was played against backups. Are you seriously mad that Team A's starters could only score 2 points on Team B's bench?

The only travesty here is the losing coach gets to keep his job. Anyone in here saying that he should have throttle back his team is stupid. Kids don't train all year to go out and play half speed because Susy Q sucks ass. Implement a mercy rule since kicking ass at your job is grounds for a suspension.

That's the great thing about sports: you play to win, and I don't care if you don't have any wins. You go play to win. When you start tellin' me it doesn't matter, then retire. Get out! 'Cause it matters."

Losing coach needs to man up and admit that he failed his team. High school athletics teach life values, do we want people to value mediocrity? NO we want winners.

Quote :
"Tryin' to get our two boys ready to carry 'em to the golf tournament 'fore practice, right? Twelve cats live 'cross the road. Our door's open. Screen's broke—we need to get a new screen door—but the screen's broke, so you can come in through the screen but you can't get back out of it. I turn'n look; there's a little kitty cat in our—in our kitchen.

So I said, "What're you doin' in here, little kitty cat?" By that time, [indecipherable cat noise], the cat turns, tries to get back out, but the screen won't go that way. Cat starts goin' "MEEOOOOW!" All crazy! And I told our players: we need to have more dogs. Beau's barkin' in the back, I have to go shut Beau up, Mel's like, "What's goin' on?" I say, "There's a cat in the house." "Cat in the house?!?" I said, "Yeah, there's a cat in the house!"

So I told our players, I tried to let it out the front door—"MEEEOOOW!"—the cat's still goin' crazy in there. And I told our players: you need to be more like a dog! We don't need a bunch of cats in here—"meeeooow!"—lookin' in the mirror. "I look gooooood, I got my extra bands on, I got my other shoes"—Be a dog! We don't need no meows, we don't need no cats. We need more dogs."

UVA? Dude these losers will be throwing men in jail for rape long before they really get raped. Anytime something happens that hurts their feelings, someone will need to be punished because they have learned that getting their feelings hurt is a punishable offense.

What happened to dusting yourself off and trying again. In high school we lost the Eastern State football game. We cried, and went back into the weight room 2 days later.

I think you're on point about the correlation of the cry baby culture with failure to take responsibility.

Rolling Stone should have to pay restitution for damaging UVA's image and the bullshit journalist should (by way of analogy) own up to her bullshit and get back in the journalistic weightroom of writing better and more accurate stories instead of just blaming some mythical sexual assault culture while dodging responsibility.

Same exact fucking thing.
