This is where we discuss all of the things that the president proposes that he knows will get shot down, only to make Republicans look like the bad guys.

jeez man, always the victim. do you actually want a discussion, or do you just want to bash?

(reminds me of the fox news "news anchor" who, before some obama speech, said something like "i really disagree with what i think obama is going to say")

Well, based on the snippets we've gotten so far...the budget, the community college tuition thing, it seems like the tone has already been set.

But we'll see. I would like to be proven wrong, and I hope I am. I'd for once like to see a congress and a president who works together to get things done that really helps.

Am I the only one who has given up watching the SOTU? Yes, I am a Republican, but it's also the whole pomp and circumstance of the SOTU that troubles me. I didn't watch last year and don't think I missed anything that a quick review of the news the next morning didn't tell me.

I think that hiking capital gains rates on families making > $500k/year is a great idea. I'd probably hike them even more, and lower the threshold a little bit.

I think that a lot of the ideas will be shitty stuff I don't agree with, but that one is a good one. Lower corporate tax rates, reduce "corporate welfare", and close loopholes & exemptions for both individuals and companies, too, but preserve the low marginal rates on high earners.

hasn't the SOTU always been pompous lip-service?

^^ how will the market react when there is a massive sell off to realize the long term capital gains at the lower rate prior to the tax increase?

^ Hows does that work? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_gains_tax_in_the_United_States

Never mind I see what you mean

"On Jan. 1, the top capital gains rate went from 15% to 20%. Plus there’s a 3.8% net investment income surtax for singles earning over $200,000 and couples earning over $250,000. No wonder planners are plotting ways around the new higher taxes. Here’s help."

Boehner only claps for issues that deal with scary foreign boogiemen

I'm sure they will implement a phase-out or grandfather period to make it less dramatic.
