^^Wow. Nice. Even if TWC gives me 1 Gb for less than Google, I'll still leave out of principle. Actually, moreso. If they could have raised it the entire time, but only did it out of fear, I'll enjoy curb stomping them.
From my research of the KC/Austin roll-outs, the timelines were approximately:
20 months from announcement before Fiberhood sign-ups begin (i.e. 20 months for mapping/planning and fiber roll-out) This period was as much as 38 months for KC, 20 months for Austin.
2 months allowed for Fiberhood sign-ups 4-6 months after deadline for connection to demarc. Installation shortly after that (i.e. days). Range depends on how quickly your Fiberhood meets the minimum # of sign-ups
The 20 months is also just to begin Fiberhood signups. If you see the Fiber links below, Austin isn't even finished yet. I'm hoping the timelines are shortened somewhat given that this is their 4th major roll-out, plus our government tends to ass kiss big business. For once, it's a positive.

So does Google Fiber coming to Raleigh mean anything for the not-so-close surrounding cities, even in the distant future? Like Rocky Mount (50 miles away)? Our upload speeds are horrible & there are just no providers that will let you have more than 8mpbs (was only 5 until a month ago). This is really shitty for businesses, especially those using cloud services & relying on the transfer of large files via email/upload to conduct business. 1/29/2015 11:50:03 AM |

charter out at the beach has been stagnant on 30/3 for 5-6 years or so. With only really crappy dsl as an alternative, and not much fiber coming into the area (apparently only 2 or 3 lines, one government use only) they don't think providing higher speeds is possible. It'll take probably another 5 years before we see 100+ down and 10+ up being available to the majority of customers.

fwiw, i think even google is expecting a more aggressive timeline than this (though perhaps my ~year estimate is still too soon)...in a recent interview with a google rep, it was noted that they learned a lot from the KC/austin installations and so they're trying to speed up the process with things like the town surveys/agreements they sent out before they even announced they were coming here1/29/2015 7:00:45 PM |

i understand this sentiment, and realize it's pretty common...but is there any reason in particular?
i find google's services to be very useful and knowingly provide them with data as payment (because anyone who thinks gmail is "free" is deluding themselves)...what i believe is that the data they collect is more or less anonymous (and so maybe i'm deluding myself)
i just don't get the aversion to trading data for services1/30/2015 1:32:41 PM |

some? of course...i just don't understand why the average person would give two shits
doing something that could get you into trouble? sure, you don't want anyone to know. working with sensitive data (financials, SSNs, etc)? yeah, i get it. super paranoid about big brother? well, it's your right to live off the grid
we're not talking about big brother here, not really...there aren't any cameras/mics in my home and i don't think google's suggesting that there will be any in the set-top boxes or routers
i'm also fairly certain google's not going to capture EVERY SINGLE BIT of data i send across their fiber and store it away for a rainy day...sure, they'll track web traffic and index my emails (probably texts, too, since i use google voice), but i can't think of a reason to care
i am 100% sure GOOGLE isn't going to steal my identity or monitor my comings and goings so they can rob my house when i'm not home or steal my nudez as blackmail...someone else? maybe...but it's a digital age and we're all smart enough to understand the risks of using teh intarwebs and owning a smartphone
*shrug*

I don't know about every other, but I've also had U-verse and Charter, and their customer service was way better. Both had better ways of obtaining/returning equipment than to take a number and line up for hours with all the dregs, like the one couple last time complaining about the government being allowed to search their home.
TWC promised me a bill credit the first month. Countless calls and it was never actually given to me. They kept forgetting to charge me for the first 3 months and ran up the bill. It finally took their level 3 managers to figure it out.
The only thing I like about them is no cap. Otherwise I'd go with Gigapower until Google arrives.
In the meantime, I'll be getting what dtownral mentioned on the last page: http://www.timewarnercable.com/content/twc/en/about-us/press/time-warner-cable-announces-commitment-to-transform-customer-exp.html
So yeah, I'd take them selling my personal information over that. Besides, you can always tunnel all your traffic through a VPN if you're really worried. They've even allowed personal use of servers. We could set up a TWW VPN network, so our shameful internet searches are not individually identifiable.

I have U-Verse and have only once ever been slapped down on the cap, but that was before I knew that U-Verse was available. Back then I had AT&T DSL and the cap was like 100GB versus 200-250 or whatever I have now. Honestly I don't know. I am syncing about 2TB of photos on OneDrive and have not hit the limit since I switched even though my internet is about three times faster. 1/31/2015 9:17:59 PM |

I hope the Comcrap/Crime Warner merger doesn't go through. I would not survive with a cap. I just checked my usage on TWC website. It only goes back 3 months:
November: 468 GB December: 1530 GB January: 457 GB
A lot of the usage in December is from downloading Xbox One games (they go up to like 80GB with expansions) and a couple Xbox 360 games. Normally I use 400-600GB a month and that is pretty much just a few hours of watching netflix or amazon in HD. 2/1/2015 8:46:09 AM |
Nighthawk All American 19621 Posts user info edit post |
I download all my games now via Steam, UPlay, and Origin, plus we stream Youtube and Netflix constantly, and I usually download whatever shows we can't stream. Plus I sync all my photos. So we use the internet a LOT. I hit the 150GB limit once on DSL and was notified by AT&T, but have yet to get popped for the U-Verse limit being blown through. Which I find hard to believe that I have not gone over it as I know in one month I setup my OneDrive to sync my photos and uploaded them all from work and then let my home connection re-download it. That was about 2TB. So I don't think they enforce the cap on U-Verse users.

Me and a few friends had heard about the closing and went last week as a last hurrah (we used to go frequently back in the day). Got to talking to the bartender while we waited and he clued us in. Apparently the owners paid $380k back when they bought the building and sold it back to Google for 2.4mil. Can't say I blame them for that, though apparently it was a rushed deal because the staff only found out about a week before the owners told the press. 4/6/2015 8:41:15 AM |

I can't wait to be free from Time Warner Cable.
TWC's shit is garbage. These Ubee router/modem combos they forced onto us are awful. I can't get below 120 ms ping on the Xbone. I've got a TWC representative on record saying anything above 60ms is not acceptable by their standards even in peak hours (did not expect that). Their customer support is a joke, I tried to explain to them that they should be able to forward ports for me if they are trying to lock me out of my own router but they are clueless.
I don't even care about download/upload, just consistent low latency without any packetloss would be great. 4/14/2015 12:37:25 PM |

^^ I have both but TWC has a fucked up set up in my apartment.
It used to be as simple as "Connect the cable to the modem = internet" but it isn't.
The phrase the customer support Indians use is "synchronize the cable signal with the modem" which, if not in sync apparently causes packet loss and 800+ ms latency. 4/17/2015 3:36:52 PM |

They got a dozen different contractor crews laying it down and when I asked the AT&T tech nearby how long until we can sign up he said 2-3 months max. ^I have too, though in a datacenter, where costs are a lot lower (raised tile floors and trays).
They did have several pieces of Ditch Witch equipment, and this is all underground. Doesn't take that many crews with 7-8 guys, each with a Ditch Witch and several trucks. Especially since they're contracting. My neighbor has worked with one of the companies in Wake Forest laying fiber and said it's a realistic amount. He said they're doing a wide rollout and it should be available around the Triangle within months. Compared to Google, that will likely take 2+ years to complete.
AT&T's scurred.

I mean, with enough crews the cost make sense. But they did not spend $600k (2 weeks) to go ~500'. They might be spending that for all of their crews, who have more total distance together, but not for that one crew. I've installed miles, in public ROW and on private property using both direct bore and trenching, that's not how much they spent in that one place. 4/22/2015 6:56:56 AM |
