Oliver Purnell out at DePaul Anthony Grant out at Alabama
I'm thinking Brian Gregory is probably the only hot seat in the ACC. Rick Barnes has got to be on the hot seat as well, especially of Texas is on the wrong side of the bubble tonight.

I think Georgia Tech still has one two more years of paying Hewitt ~$1.2 million annually for his buyout so I doubt they'd add Gregory's (supposedly ~$2.4 million total over 3 years) on top of whatever it costs them to hire a new coach, but maybe they have more money than I realize.

Yeah that'd be the only reason not to fire him.
Crean at Indiana is another one I forgot about being on the hot seat.

Barnes and Crean saved their jobs for now. I don't think we will see any ACC coaching changes this year which is remarkable. Could actually be a very quiet coaching carousel this year. 3/15/2015 9:49:43 PM |

LOL at Liberty. Their mens team was a huge pile of steaming shit. I live in VA and catch some of their games on radio and recaps. What a nightmare of a team.
Also only one major conference firing so far...

so ETSU apparently reached out to "NC State assistants" about their opening. I hope Lutz doesn't bail on us.

Seems like Lutz has had better offers than ETSU the last few offseasons that he's turned down. 3/15/2015 10:52:55 PM |
spencer All American 3640 Posts user info edit post |
I was under the impression that he interviewed for a few jobs but hadn't been offered one yet.
Quote : | "Bartow’s base pay is $164,800. According to the athletic director, the long-time men’s basketball coach brings in roughly $1.2 million in revenue a year." |
That second line is a little unclear as I have a hard time believing he gets $1+ million in supplementary income as the head coach of ETSU, but maybe I'm wrong. IIRC, Lutz is getting close to double Bartow's salary here, but I guess that doesn't matter much if his ultimate goal is to be head coach again.3/15/2015 11:28:35 PM |
dmspack oh we back 25533 Posts user info edit post |
You may be right about the interviewing but not offering. I couldn't remember for sure.
I wonder if that means that ETSU program generates that much revenue? Like...it says he as the coach brings in $1.2M in revenue. But revenue obviously =/= salary. So I have no idea what that's about 3/15/2015 11:34:26 PM |
spencer All American 3640 Posts user info edit post |
I was thinking the same thing (revenue brought in by the program) but it says "coach brings in..." which is what makes it strange. I have a feeling it's the program revenue though, and the writer of that article just did a bad job, because I can't think of any way that an ETSU coach pulls in an extra $1+ million in compensation. 3/15/2015 11:53:53 PM |

man, I know that dude must really love actually coaching basketball, but I can't say I feel too bad for him since he'll collect $2.4 million from GT over the next two year for doing nothing, in addition to whatever buyout he gets from George Mason for the $750k left on his deal. and he just got a "longevity bonus" of $85k a couple weeks ago. 3/16/2015 5:43:23 PM |

Yeah i surprised he wanted another job so quickly. I figured with that kinda buyout he'd just take a few years, maybe do announcing or something. And try to get back into coaching later 3/16/2015 6:45:41 PM |

Paul Hewitt didn't take a few years off because his GT contract/buyout was fully guaranteed and did not change regardless of whether he got another coaching job. 99.999% of buyouts are not this way, and if the coach gets another job, the previous school only has to make up the difference in salary.
Paul Hewitt is my hero.
Also one time he turned around and told me/us to and i quote "SHUT THE FUCK UP". good times. 3/16/2015 6:51:29 PM |

well honestly, it has less to do with his agent and more to do with the GT athletic director/board of trustees (or whoever approves contracts) being morons. because chan gailey got a similar deal. He made $4 million after he got fired. 3/16/2015 7:16:56 PM |

I don't really know the details of Gailey's contract so it may have been the same, but the awesome part about Hewitt's contract (for him, at least) was that it automatically extended one year each and every year, no matter what (barring NCAA violations or criminal activity or anything like that). He constantly had somewhere between 5 & 6 years remaining on his contract so it's not like they could have waited him out for the buyout to get lower, so his buyout was always going to be at least ~$7 million. 3/16/2015 8:01:37 PM |

Hahaha Hewitt's agent is the GOAT. 3/16/2015 8:07:21 PM |
spencer All American 3640 Posts user info edit post |
yeah and IIRC, Hewitt's estate would have gotten paid the same amount if he died. basically the only way GT wouldn't have to pay that money was if he got fired for cause (which they probably could have done if they waited like 4 more months when the NCAA put them on probation for major recruiting violations committed under Hewitt)

Syracuse officials made the announcement in the wake of the NCAA's penalties against the SU basketball program, which were announced less than two weeks ago.
The move comes on the heels of Wednesday's announcement that Daryl Gross is out as Syracuse athletic director.
The announcement marks the first time that Boeheim and SU officials have put an actual date on his retirement." |

Archie signs extension, locked up through the 21-22 season.
http://www.whio.com/news/sports/college-basketball/ud-extends-archie-millers-contract/nkftM/
I was looking at their coaching history prior to Archie.
Brian Gregory's ceiling at GT was an NIT championship and had once NCAA appearance in his career there. GT snagged him two years after the NIT championship after a 1st round exit from the NIT.
Oliver Purnell before him had once NCAAT appearance and a bunch of NIT appearances.
I mean I realize Clemson and GT aren't exactly historical basketball powerhouses, but you'd think they could aim and hit higher than that.
Archie's gone to the NCAAT twice in three years, with an elite 8 and a round of 32 exit. Not too bad. If he continues, somebody is gonna buy him out. This all works out well for Archie. He's got at least 6 years of job security and if the right program come knocking he can move up or re-up his contract at least. 3/26/2015 11:48:27 AM |

Yeah the A-10 is a legit basketball conference. With Richmond and VCU in my backyard, i've seen a lot of A-10 ball over the past couple of years, and from the games i've gone to, A-10 is like the ACC's mini-me. Hell, VCU has a better atmosphere than several ACC teams.
Gregg Doyel's been talking up Archie to Indiana for a few weeks now, though it looks like Crean's job is safe for this year at least. 3/27/2015 12:01:40 PM |
