http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-rolling-stone-rape-story-review-20150405-story.html

Quote :
"Rolling Stone is pledging to review its editorial practices but won't fire anyone after a leading journalism school issued a blistering critique of how it reported and edited a discredited article about an alleged gang rape at the University of Virginia.

The Columbia Graduate School of Journalism said in the Sunday report that the magazine's shortcomings "encompassed reporting, editing, editorial supervision and fact-checking.""

It doesn't matter if the news is factual anymore. This is the age of journalistic activism. I don't know if that is a real thing I just made it up.

Facts don't matter, as long as your article brings attention to whatever issue you think is a problem.

I asked thegoodlife3 to comment whenever he's done complaining about racism in Sports Talk.

He is after all their biggest fan, but more than likely he will just switch to Salon (or something).

Journalistic activism is not a new thing. Neither is sensationalist reporting. It may have gotten worse in the fact checking department, due to the need to be the first to report on something. But I think instantaneous access and sharing of the stories makes it appear more prevalent than it used to be.

The problem with quite a few scenarios is that people don't stop and ask themselves: "If I am wrong, is it better to ruin a few lives and be the first to break the story, or should I verify and risk losing the punch?" Or, "even if I am right, is this the correct thing to do?" A good example of the second part here would be the french reporters tweeting the location of hostages in a freezer during a massacre. Yes, it was the truth, yes it was real time, and yes, that is why you endangered human lives that day.

There is a difference between being the first to break a story, and the first to break a story that you or someone else just made up.

I think Canadian Geese are an extreme nuisance. I hate them and wish I could make them go extinct. Maybe to further my desires, I'm going to report on this man whose second cousin's wife's aunt was eaten alive by a pack of roaming Canadian Geese.

And then when it comes out that the lady was feeding bread to one and got her finger nipped a little, I'll apologize then. And remain employed.

seems legit. I think NBC Nightly News would run it. Rolling Stone would have the geese raping people by the time its over with. Fox News would say that the geese are actually Muslim geese and they're in league with ISIS.

Do you think the reporter had knowledge that the story was made up? Or do you think she just neglected to fact check? There's a huge difference.

I also like to never assume malice that can be explained by incompetence.

But I just have to ask the question why she neglected to fact check. She wanted this to be true so badly she gave up on her integrity.

You know those things, the geese, poop 3 lbs a day? And they're mean as hell to boot.

I saw someone get attacked by geese in a parking lot before. There's even a video floating around of the news segment that covered it.

we have geese, ducks and swans in our lake.

The ducks are awesome and don't bother anyone. the swans are awesome too because they will fight the geese and win.

but the goddamn geese outnumber everyone else and are like giant flying rats that shit everywhere. My dog generally chases em out of my yard at least. i have one neighbor who'll chase them away with an air rifle.

but they suck. they're awful animals, and i wish they'd go extinct. nobody would miss them. except canada maybe.

From all reports this wasn't rape, the girl swallowed all the evidence.

Would someone being fired make you happy?

The university is pulling a fox new by not ending after someone gets raped...

Everyone makes mistakes, but this wasn't a mistake, this was negligence.

Should someone be fired for negligence? Yes.
