don't see how it is different from many other meal replacements?
* rice protein? that's not a complete protein. * first ingredient is sunflower oil? ummm, no thanks. * no breakdown of PUFA and MUFA. are they hiding high PUFA content? * if we are supposed to have 4 a day and nothing else, needs 50% more fiber. 4/15/2015 5:24:08 PM |

^ I am with you there, but it would be good to have something like that on hand for times when one is just too damn busy to prepare anything decent. I am going through a period like that now for the past couple of weeks and wish I had something like that, but as I said, I am not convinced by the nutrition info and ingredients and require something better. Having said that, I wouldn't mind having it for short periods of time, but being a student, can't really afford it. Oh well, about to graduate anyway. 4/16/2015 12:45:05 AM |

Coworker of mine tried it for a week. He reported lower energy levels, and some of the foulest smelling farts he's ever encountered in his life.
I wonder why the company would call it soylent though. Obviously people are going to associate it with the movie. 4/16/2015 9:08:40 AM |

Of course they are going to associate it with the _book_. This was started as a nerdy sort of thing by a Software Engineer and the name was a joke. Its supposed to be for mega-coding sessions when you want something quick without interrupting workflow. Essentially was created as a replacement for shotgunning Coffee or Mountain Dew.
The marketing has been altered because it moved away from the original creator who got it crowd-funded and towards a corporation running things. 4/16/2015 10:17:19 AM |

The recipe is open source and there are dozens, if not hundreds of alternatives for people who aren't satisfied with soylent.me recipe, ingredients and/or sources.
Maybe you eat super crazy healthy and run everything you eat through a microscope, but I am a lazy fucker and I know I eat like crap. So Soylent is giving me at least a baseline of nutrition that is many times better than I get otherwise.
I'm going to try this week just having soylent for all my meals. So far I've just been having it for breakfast and occasionally dinner/late night meal.4/20/2015 7:19:00 PM |

You do realize those articles are from a year and two years ago respectively and are on version 1.0 and 1.1 which bears almost no resemblance to version 1.5 today. no more gas, no more oil mixing, better shelf life, easier digestion to name just a few.
Most of the quips and qualms with Soylent are based on the very first version. 8/11/2015 4:45:03 PM |

^^ Not until late October, and it won't replace v1.5
They will continue selling a powder version, as well as the liquid version. It will be interesting to see how they handle version numbering going forward though.
^Not even remotely similar ot slimquick / slimfast or any other diet drink. Soylent provides 2000 calories per day and full nutrition. You aren't going to lose weight unless you just cut calories. It also has a fraction of the sugar. Neckbeards eat shitty food, which this is not.
Also it's her first time on camera, she was nervous. I thought she did a good job though 8/11/2015 10:08:51 PM |

^^My fatassness is due to lack of execution / willpower, not lack of knowledge.
It isn't expensive or shitty. Cost per calorie, it's about as cheap as you can get for a balanced diet ($2.00 per meal).
I don't *think* it's healthy. I know it's healthy. The ingredients and nutrition are easily viewed. Unless you eat 100% from-scratch, from-raw meals, I doubt you're going to do any better nutritionally speaking.
https://www.soylent.com/product/powder/ for ingredients. They don't hide anything. It's probably the most transparent food product sold in terms of it's makeup and processing.
^ I tend to use it for breakfast and occasionally for a snack alternative, or a meal on the go when I would have gotten some shitty fast food instead. It's nearly impossible to actually replace ALL your food with it (which is the point of the video above )

IIRC, the benefits of eating many smaller meals per day are undefinable (with a bias towards slightly-better-for-you, in theory); however, people tend to eat many more calories per day using such methods when they are not in a scientific study (i.e. they are free to eat whatever they want), and it typically ends up in weight gain. 8/17/2015 11:56:48 AM |

LULZ. first ingredient on the website:
Soy protein A new soy protein isolate adds improved digestion, smoother texture, and a more robust amino acid profile
Anyway, though I think the whole idea is gross/unnecessary and the focus on reductionism is pretty shortsighted, I'm sure this stuff is reasonably OK for you. And you could probably lose weight with it, since the food reward is so low assuming you don't eat other things. If it works for you, more power to ya. Really the main reason I hate this stuff is the because the creator is such an incessant douche.

^ I checked this https://www.soylent.com/product/powder which shows rice as the source of protein. Are they switching to soy for the 2.0 which is not out yet?
So I checked. 2.0 has switched to soy protein, at least the pre-made bottled version, as the powder version is not on the site yet. The current 1.5 version (powder) uses rice protein.

^Yep. I actually have a pretty bad intolerance to soy, so I won't be using the liquid version.
And yes, the founder is becoming Howard Hughes weird. 8/18/2015 7:35:54 PM |

So will the 2.0 powder version continue to have rice protein?
Cuz if not, and the only choice they offer is soy protein, that's not good, and their sales might plummet.
Ideally they should offer the choice of both proteins in both versions. If liquid only with soy, and powder only with rice, why? Doesn't make sense at all, logical or business sense.
