But if the fairest and justest country on the face of the planet (as it and many of it's citizens like to believe) can do that, what hope is there for other countries?

America is the country that thumps it's chest the most regarding human rights and justice on this planet, and that's why this is orders of magnitude more deplorable than if, say, it were to happen in Bosnia, South Korea, or Jordan. Those countries (and 150+ others) don't go around with a megaphone telling the world to respect human rights, let alone, attacking countries because of human rights violations.

You don't need a utopia, just some basic human decency to say we are sorry, and we will clear your name in the media, and punish those who falsely accused you. BARE MINIMUM HUMAN DECENCY. And if you have a bit more than the bare minimum, you also compensate the person.

- Freedom of the press. America is better with it than without. Without freedom of the press you would likely never hear her side of the story either.

- This has yet to be proven, but even if true it has nothing to do with the US legal system.

- Filing a false report is a crime. If there is evidence then it should be charged. Maybe the evidence isn't there, or maybe the system failed. I don't think we can trust a dramatized version of the events put together by a law firm with a pending lawsuit to give us enough information to make that judgment call.

But here's the important thing to keep in mind as you criticize our legal system. The litigation that she is engaging in, the litigation that will be her recourse if she has truly been wronged, is built into the US legal system which you have criticized so harshly. Our system is far from perfect, but it is the same system which provides her with the ability to sue for the mistreatment that she claims to have received. This story clearly isn't over yet, so maybe you should give it a chance to play out in its entirety before calling it a failure.
