Has anybody done this? I haven't got a luggage rack. But I've only got to drive it like 1 mile.
Suggestions for how I ought to approach this task/whether I'm an idiot for even trying it? 5/11/2015 11:42:01 PM

can prob rent a Uhaul truck for $20 to move it.
or maybe a pickup from Home Depot for less than that? Not sure; they rent by the hour. 5/11/2015 11:46:17 PM

Hey, you're right, I could totally rent a Uhaul for like $27 total.
But I'm a cheap bastard. Also, I'm only paying $40 for the box-spring mattress itself. So it seems kinda overkill to spend $25 just to transport it. 5/11/2015 11:51:27 PM

Since you're only going a mile, just have your windows down and wrap it tight to your roof through your car with some decent rope. 5/11/2015 11:54:07 PM

Yep, that or a friend with the truck is easily the best option. 5/12/2015 6:21:33 AM

i've seen so many people lose mattresses on the road doing similar things. just make sure to strap it down good. 5/12/2015 7:13:43 AM

if you are not going far, just throw a blanket down underneath it and strap it down to the roof and don't go on any highways or interstates. mattresses are the ones that are trickier, a box spring is easy. 5/12/2015 8:17:58 AM

I drove a queen size back from Charlotte (ikea) ... I opened the hood and ran the rope in front of the hinges, and then ran it all the way to the back of the car ... Then I opened the doors and ran rope from side to side inside the car ... Kept everything tight ... worked fine .... 5/12/2015 8:31:02 AM

nice suggestion...I was just going to use a sheet as a guard, but a blanket would work much better. I have no extras, but I'll stop by Goodwill and pick one up, probably.

sounds like a plan.
I'll let you people know when I drop a box-spring in the middle of the road and cause havoc/destruction/explosions. 5/12/2015 10:36:38 AM

1 mile? Use a wheel-barrow. Or a few skateboards

Or yeah, just find someone with a truck and a few minutes. 5/12/2015 12:29:36 PM

just get someone to lay on top of the mattress while it's on your roof and have him hold on to the roof rack.

mission accomplished. I just posted an ad on Facebook's "Free and For Sale" and got this chick with a pickup to help me, for $15.
Also, during the drive she played Oasis ("Champagne Supernova") and she was kind of apologetic about it, and I was like Fuck no, I love me some Oasis.

Back in '06 I transported a queen sized mattress and box spring on the roof of my Integra a few miles, through Queens. Piece of cake. 5/12/2015 4:46:25 PM

Box-springs are light. You probably coulda just carried it a mile now that I think about it. 5/12/2015 6:43:53 PM

yeah, I probably could have, if my life had depended on it. but it was a queen-size, and pretty heavy. carrying it a freaking mile would NOT have been fun, believe me.
plus, if you're just walking down the sidewalk carrying a box-spring mattress, you kinda look like a loser. which I am; but I try not to shout it. 5/12/2015 10:18:34 PM
